Patrick Mahomes Is Playing Super Bowl 59 With A Heavy Heart

Patrick Mahomes is playing in his third consecutive Super Bowl on Sunday night – and he’s doing so with a heavy heart.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59 on Sunday evening. Kansas City, which has won the past two Super Bowls, is going for a three-peat. It would be the first three-peat in modern NFL history. Philadelphia, meanwhile, is looking to take down the vaunted Chiefs – and win the first Super Bowl of the Jalen Hurts era.

Mahomes, who has already won three Super Bowls at just 29 years of age, is looking to cement himself in the history books with a third straight championship on Sunday evening. But the Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback will be playing with a heavy heart and a tough topic on his mind.

Mahomes will be playing in Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans while his grandfather on his mom’s side is in hospice care, fighting for his final moments.

The Mahomes family has been dealing with the tough medical situation for several months now. Patrick Mahomes’ mom, Randi Mahomes, has been sharing updates on her dad throughout the 2024 NFL season. He’s tragically been hospitalized multiple times and now appears to be in his final days.

Patrick Mahomes will be taking the field at Caesars Superdome with a heavy heart on Sunday night.

“I know that it has meant a lot to him,” Randi Mahomes said, per PEOPLE. “And I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play.

“I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud. And my mom was very proud, and his other grandparents [were too].”

Randi Mahomes added that while her dad has been struggling to hang on, the one thing he remembers is the date and time of Super Bowl 59, so he can watch his grandson play.

Mrs. Mahomes announced in September that her father had been hospitalized, asking for prayers.

“Prayer warriors please pray for my daddy. He is in the hospital and is not well His name is Randy,” she wrote on X Sept. 14. She later added: “This is how I fight my battles. If you are seeing this, take a moment, and PRAY for my dad now.”

Our thoughts are with the Mahomes family during this tough time.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. E.T. on Sunday night. The game will air on FOX.
