Joe Biden, 82, Becomes a Great-Grandfather as Granddaughter Naomi Gives Birth

Over two years after tying the knot with her husband, Joe Biden’s granddaughter Naomi Biden has given birth following her pregnancy announcement via Instagram Stories last year (2024).

On January 9, 2025, the First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS) Jill Biden, 73, took to Instagram to introduce the new addition to the Biden family. The granddaughter of President of the United States (POTUS) Joe Biden, 82, Naomi Biden, 31, recently welcomed a baby with her law school graduate husband Peter George Heermann Neal.

The image captured the POTUS and FLOTUS sitting side by side on a cushioned bench in the hospital cradling the baby. Wrapped snugly in a classic hospital-issued striped blanket, the newborn rested peacefully in his great-grandfather’s arms, his delicate face barely peeking out from the soft folds of the swaddle.

While Joe gazed down at his great-grandson with a look of quiet pride, Jill gently adjusted the little hat on the baby’s head. The accompanying caption reads, “We are proud to introduce you to our great-grandson: William Brannon Neal, IV.”

On the same day that Jill shared the photo, Joe couldn’t help but share his personal joy during a more somber occasion — a briefing on the Palisades Wildfire in California.

While addressing the devastation caused by the wildfire, which threatened homes in the region, the POTUS took a moment to announce his family’s exciting news.

“There’s only one piece of good news,” he said. Joe then revealed that his eldest granddaughter had given birth earlier that day. His announcement was met with applause as he shared details about the baby’s arrival, noting, “A 10-pound, 4-ounce […] baby boy.”

The contrast between the devastating effects of the wildfire and the joy of welcoming a new life wasn’t lost on the President, who acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the day. “I’m going to remember this day for a lot of the wrong reasons,” he admitted.

Joe also disclosed that it was initially thought that Naomi and Peter’s home burned down due to the wildfires. However, he added, “Today, it appears that maybe it’s still standing. We’re not sure.”

The arrival of Naomi and Peter’s baby boy comes just over two months after Naomi first revealed that she was expectingThe announcement, which coincided with Election Day on November 5, 2024, was shared with her Instagram followers in a subtle yet meaningful way.

Taking to her Instagram Stories, Naomi posted a mirror selfie that showcased her growing baby bump adorned with a voting sticker. The sentimental snapshot carried a simple caption that read, “(we) voted,” accompanied by an American flag and upside-down smiling face emojis.

Naomi, who is the daughter of the President’s son Hunter Biden and his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle, kept the announcement understated but impactful.

Joe’s granddaughter’s pregnancy reveal came three years after she and Peter took a major step in their relationship. Back in September 2021, Peter proposed to Naomi near his childhood home in picturesque Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

According to the White House, Peter popped the question with a meaningful ring that featured the band from his grandmother’s engagement ring, making the proposal even more special.

To top off the romantic day, both of their families were on hand to surprise the couple after the proposal, turning it into a heartwarming family celebration.

Naomi later shared her joy on Instagram with a sunlit selfie alongside Peter. In the photo, which appears to be taken outdoors in a peaceful meadow, the couple smiles brightly at the camera, basking in the golden glow of the setting sun. “Forever 🤍,” promised Naomi in her caption.

Following their engagement, Naomi and Peter began planning what would become one of the most memorable moments of their relationship — their elegant White House wedding.

In early 2022, the Biden family confirmed that the couple’s reception would be held at one of the most iconic addresses in the country: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

“The President and First Lady will host the wedding reception for their granddaughter Naomi Biden and her fiancé Peter Neal at the White House on November 19, 2022,” shared Elizabeth Alexander, Jill’s communications director, in a statement to People magazine.

Though the details were still in the early planning stages at the time of the announcement, the First Family expressed excitement about the upcoming celebration, promising that more updates would be shared in the months leading up to the big day.

Michael LaRosa, then press secretary for the FLOTUS, clarified that the wedding-related events at the White House would be privately funded by the Biden family. He noted that the arrangements were consistent with past White House weddings, where families of the brides and grooms traditionally take care of the expenses.
