Kansas City Chiefs president Mark Donovan addressed the media on Friday from Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri, emphasizing the team’s ongoing search for a stable, long-term stadium solution. This discussion comes after a proposal that would have funded the Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals was rejected earlier in April. Donovan highlighted that the Chiefs are actively exploring a variety of alternatives and expect to decide within the next six months.
During the press event, Donovan mentioned the recently enhanced STAR Bonds effort by the Kansas legislature, acknowledging it as a viable option for the team’s relocation. He confirmed ongoing discussions are taking place with both Kansas and Missouri officials, examining multiple possibilities that are cropping up on the Missouri side as well.
In response to direct questions about the likelihood of moving to Kansas, Donovan assured that all options are being considered seriously. He also discussed the timeframes associated with either renovating the existing Arrowhead Stadium or constructing a new venue, noting the Chiefs need to finalize their plans sooner to ensure readiness for the 2031 season, whether in a new or an upgraded facility.
Despite previously favoring a renovation of Arrowhead Stadium, Donovan expressed a more reserved commitment to any single option, influenced by the failure of the funding proposal. He described the ongoing evaluation as a “generational decision” critical to the future of the team and emphasized the necessity of making a deliberate and well-considered choice within the swiftly narrowing window for action.
