Controversial calls disrupt LSU-South Carolina ending, leads to reaction

Several controversial calls disrupted the ending of LSU’s 36-33 win over South Carolina, including two defensive touchdowns taken off the board, highlighted by a pick-six late in the contest. South Carolina built a 24-10 lead in the first half in hopes of snapping a six-game skid against top 25 competition, but it wasn’t to be as the Tigers led for the first time in the contest with 1:12 left.

“Says a lot about LSU and their character and they got some breaks, let’s face it, people are going to go back on ‘X’ and say how is this not a call, how is that not a call … everyone is going to talk about that,” Kirk Herbstreit said after the game.  “But at the end of the day, disheartening. Whoever loses this game, this is a tough one. (Both teams) played well enough to win. LSU made just enough plays to get out of there with a win.”

Host Chris Fowler said said LSU’s win was “gritty” and there would be “a lot of chatter because the officials played a large part in deciding things” in the final seconds.

“What are football fans supposed to think of that? It could be different from one crew to the next,” Herbstreit said during the broadcast.
