NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson apologizes for Tom Brady on-air criticism

Rookie broadcaster, and arguably the greatest NFL player ever, Tom Brady didn’t show enough enthusiasm for boisterous NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson when Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey lined up for a 71-yard field goal attempt near halftime Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

Hanson criticized Brady for a lack of excitement about the possible field goal attempt Sunday. He then backed off his remark Monday apologizing on X for an “unfair and inconsiderate” shot at Brady.

Hanson cut in during the RedZone broadcast shortly after Brady and Fox’s Kevin Burkhardt went through the scenario of the possible field goal before the Browns called a timeout. The Cowboys pulled Aubrey off the field after the timeout and Dallas punted instead.

“Oh come on! Brady’s gotta get more excited than that in the booth,” Hanson said.

The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand wrote Brady “sounded like a rookie out of the gate Sunday. His syntax was stilted. His interesting thoughts were limited. It was a bit awkward.” But added, “Brady eventually settled down a little and showed flashes.”

The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch also wrote: “Sunday, Brady came off as someone attempting to learn the craft in real time. That’s not a criticism. It’s just reality. He first spoke on-air at 4:23 p.m. ET with the usual scene-setter stuff and was very deliberate over the first quarter. Everything felt a little slow, with him and Burkhardt still finding a conversation rhythm.

“Brady got more comfortable as the broadcast continued, and I’d expect that to be the pattern as the season continues. If you desperately want me to grade him, I’d give him 2 1/4 goats out of four. Fox will take that for his first regular-season game.”

Brady, Burkhardt and the No. 1 Fox crew will be on the call when the New Orleans Saints visit the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
