NBC Announces Major Decision Regarding Jason Garrett’s Future With Network Ahead Of 2024 NFL & NCAA Seasons

There have been some drastic changes in the NFL media industry over the past two years, but former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and head coach Jason Garrett will retain his usual position with NBC for the 2024 season.

Jason Garrett’s work as an analyst for the NFL and Notre Dame Fighting Irish football games has been the subject of widespread criticism. Considering that NBC was happy to pull the plug on the Drew Brees project after just one year, some wondered if Garrett was also on borrowed time with the network.

But in a statement released by the network on Tuesday, NBC announced that Garrett will continue to work on the Notre Dame football game broadcasts, with play-by-play man Dan Hicks and reporter Zora Stephenson. Garrett will also continue his coverage on their “Football Night in America” program:

“NBC Sports’ unprecedented 34th season broadcasting Notre Dame Football will have veteran play-by-play voice Dan Hicks, analyst Jason Garrett, and reporter Zora Stephenson as the broadcast crew. Hicks returns to South Bend after calling Fighting Irish games from 2013-2016. Garrett, who is also an analyst on FNIA, had a 12-year career in the NFL as a quarterback and spent 16 years as an NFL coach, including nine as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Stephenson returns to the Notre Dame sidelines for the third consecutive season.”

NBC’s first big change with their NFL broadcasting crews began two seasons ago, when Mike Tirico replaced Al Michaels as the play-by-play voice for “Sunday Night Football.” Michaels moved over to Amazon Prime Video to call “Thursday Night Football” with Kirk Herbstreit.

Hall of Fame head coach Tony Dungy was moved to an on-site analyst role, with New England Patriots legend Devin McCourty taking over Dungy’s “Football Night in America” position.

Jason Garrett Enters Third Year With NBC

Jason Garrett was head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2010 to 2019 before the New York Giants hired him for their offensive coordinator role in 2020. He was fired in the midst of the 2021 season and replaced with former Cleveland Browns HC Freddie Kitchens.

Garrett was picked up by NBC, adding another notable former player/coach to the lineup alongside Dungy, Rodney Harrison and Cris Collinsworth.

NBC will air the NFL Kickoff Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5, a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game.
