Houston Texans defensive end Danielle Hunter made a genius split-second decision while rushing Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen in Thursday night’s game at NRG Stadium, a play that deserves extra attention and respect.
In a wild prime-time clash that saw head referee Adrian Hill get carted off with a leg injury, the Texans squeaked out a 23-19 victory against the reigning MVP and his Bills. Houston moved to 6-5 on the year, while Buffalo dropped to 7-4, already matching last year’s loss total.
As frustrating as the day was for Josh Allen (no touchdowns, two interceptions and eight sacks) and the Buffalo offense, it could have been a lot worse if not for a heads-up decision by Danielle Hunter.
In the clip below, it looks like Hunter decided to “switch grips” while bringing down Allen so that he didn’t tackle him in a dangerous fashion. Hunter’s quick thinking here just might have helped the star QB avoid a serious injury:
Take note, opposing defenders. Not only are you decreasing your chances of being flagged for “roughing the passer”, but you’re doing the entire league a service by not always trying to inflict as much pain as possible on the opposing QB, especially in moments where you have him down for an easy sack anyway.
