Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star running back Doug Martin has tragically passed away at the age of 36.
Citing a source that had “direct knowledge,” TMZ reports that the two-time Pro Bowler and 2015 First-team All-Pro recently passed away, though the exact date and cause of death are unclear.
News of Doug Martin’s tragic death comes less than a month after another former star running back, ex-Cincinnati Bengals standout Rudi Johnson, passed away at the age of 45. Authorities announced Johnson’s cause of death was a suicide.
Nicknamed “Hamster”, Doug Martin played for the Buccaneers from 2012 to 2017 and one season with the Oakland Raiders (2018). He exceeded 1,400 rushing yards four times, posting a career-high 1,454 in his 2012 rookie year.
Injuries limited Martin to 17 games over the 2013 and 2014 seasons, but he regained his star-like form in 2015 with 1,402 yards and six touchdowns. Unfortunately, injuries limited him to 19 games over the next two years.
Despite playing just 68 games as a Buc, Martin is fourth on the franchise rushing leader board (4,633) and third in rushing touchdowns (26), per Pro Football Reference.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Doug Martin’s family and friends during his devastating time.
