Trae Young Reveals How It Felt Like Being Dubbed “The Next Steph Curry” In College Despite Both Having Different Playstyles

The Atlanta Hawks’ standout player, Trae Young, was selected with the fifth pick by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2018 NBA draft. He was later traded to the Atlanta Hawks along with a future first-round pick. However, before entering the NBA, he was often compared to a Golden State Warriors star player while playing for the Oklahoma Sooners. Recently, during an appearance on Podcast P with Paul George, the three-time NBA all-star explained an incident where he was being called the next Stephen Curry, who recently poked fun at Anthony Edwards.

“That (pressure) really all started in college. We played in the Phil Knight tournament, had a really good showing, and then we were on ESPN every day. I swear that’s all they were pushing – ‘The next Steph Curry.’ I never paid too much attention to it. I never was like, ‘Yeah, I’m about to be the next Steph.’” Young said.

In his sophomore year, Young averaged 25 points, five assists, and four rebounds per game, and he was named Oklahoma’s Sophomore of the Year. In his junior year, the Hawks’ star significantly upgraded his skills and dominated the court, averaging 34.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. During his senior year, Young amazed everyone with his stats, averaging 42.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists.

Young Unveils The Surprising Truth Behind the Comparison

Young elaborated on the comparisons made between him and Curry. He stated that Steve Nash was his favorite player while he was growing up and that many other players had also inspired him.

“I’ve always believed in taking a bit from everyone’s game. Steve Nash was my favorite player growing up, and I picked up elements from many different players. That’s why I think Steph and I have similarities but also distinct differences in our games…When I was in college, Curry said something that made it all the more real. We were among the top five in the country in the Big 12, and he commented, ‘He’s so electrifying every time you watch him’…” Young added.

When he was in college, Young mentioned that Curry complimented him. However, the 25-year-old star has been a crucial part of the Hawks’ success in recent years. He dominated the league after being drafted and achieved several remarkable feats. It will be fascinating to see what he will bring in the next NBA season.
