Trump threatens to ‘send troops’ to Baltimore as he seeks to expand crime crackdown | Irish Star

Donald Trump has threatened to deploy troops to Baltimore, naming the city as the next potential target for a federal crackdown similar to one implemented in Washington DC.

On Sunday, Trump dismissed an invitation from Maryland Governor Wes Moore to tour the city and accused the Democrat of maintaining a “very bad” track record on crime.

“Governor Wes Moore of Maryland has asked, in a rather nasty and provocative tone, that I ‘walk the streets of Maryland’ with him. I assume he is talking about out of control, crime ridden, Baltimore? As President, I would much prefer that he clean up this Crime disaster before I go there for a ‘walk,'” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“But if Wes Moore needs help, like Gavin Newscum did in L.A., I will send in the ‘troops,’ which is being done in nearby DC, and quickly clean up the Crime,” Trump’s lengthy tirade continued.

“After only one week, there is NO CRIME AND NO MURDER IN DC! When it is like that in Baltimore, I will proudly ‘walk the streets’ with the failing, because of Crime, Governor of Maryland. P.S. Baltimore is ranked the 4th WORST CITY IN THE NATION IN CRIME and MURDER. Stop talking and get to work, Wes. I’ll then see you on the streets! ! !”, reports the Mirror US.

The president also warned he might “reconsider” funding for the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which experienced a catastrophe in 2024 and needed reconstruction, as it serves as one of the nation’s major ports handling more than $80 billion in international cargo annually. “Also, I gave Wes Moore a lot of money to fix his demolished bridge. I will now have to rethink that decision? ? ? Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DJT,” the president concluded.

In response, Moore told NBC that Trump “would rather attack his country’s largest cities from behind a desk than walk the streets with the people he represents.

“The President should join us in Baltimore because the blissful ignorance, tropes, and the 1980s scare tactics benefit no one. We need leaders who are there helping the people who are actually on the ground doing the work,” Moore added.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott previously stated that crime rates have dropped over the past year. According to the Mayor’s office, “Compared to this time last year, the city has seen a 24.3% decrease in homicides and a 18.3% decline in nonfatal shootings. So far this year, Baltimore has had 84 homicides- the fewest in over 50 years- compared to 111 homicides in the first seven months of 2024.”

Since Mayor Scott assumed office, the Baltimore Police Department’s (BPD) homicide clearance rate has leaped from 40.3% in 2020 to 68.2% in 2024. The clearance rate for 2025 is currently 64.3%, significantly above the national average, according to his office.
