Tom Craig, a member of the Australian Olympic hockey team, was arrested in Paris.
Australian field hockey player Tom Craig was arrested for an alleged attempt to buy cocaine from a 17-year-old amid the Summer Olympics in Paris.
The 28-year-old departed a team function Tuesday night, and some 15 minutes later, he would find himself arrested for allegedly buying one gram of cocaine from a street dealer, per the Herald Sun.
Tom Craig wasn’t slated to play anymore since Australia’s men’s hockey team run at the Paris Olympics ended Sunday with a 2-0 quarterfinal loss to the Netherlands.
The Paris police department released a statement saying officers “witnessed a cocaine transaction at the foot of a building in the 9th arrondissement” between a 17-year-old supplier and a 28-year-old buyer who “is said” to be a member of Australia’s field hockey team, per TMZ.
Many team members went out on the town after their elimination. According to the Herald Sun, they were told that they had 48 hours to leave the Olympic Village after their elimination, but they had the option to stay longer.
For Tom Craig, he was immediately apologetic for his actions.
“I’d firstly like to apologize for what has occurred the past 24 hours,” Craig said Wednesday, as captured by the Sydney Morning Herald. “I made a terrible mistake. I take full responsibility for my actions.
“My actions are my own and by no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport and the Australian Olympic team. I’ve embarrassed you all, and I’m truly sorry.”
The local police did not provide specifics on the amount of drugs involved, but the dealer did have seven cocaine vials and 75 ecstasy pills in their possession at the time of their arrest.
Tom Craig Did Medal During The 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Tom Craig from the Australian field hockey team was arrested on the night of Tuesday after police caught him buying cocaine on the street from a drug dealer.
His Australian team had already been eliminated from the Olympics without winning a medal.
This is a bad look for Craig who was part of the Australian team that won a silver medal at the last Tokyo 2020 Games and also won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
