James Lynn Marshall had a lot more life to live, but it was tragically taken away from him.
Fort Worth authorities are currently investigating the death of the former Carthage resident and High School football player, who was fatally shot last Sunday.
Marshall was found in a backyard on Forest Avenue in Fort Worth with gunshots in his upper body, according to police.
He was just 28 years old.
Detectives said there was a verbal argument involving an unknown suspect before shots were fired. No arrests have been made.
A funeral service for James Lynn Marshall was held on June 21st at Still Waters Cowboy Church in Carthage.
In a statement, Carthage ISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Scott Surratt said Marshall was a good kid who was easy to coach and always worked hard.
“He was a really good player for us at Carthage who went on to play at the next level. We’re heartbroken to hear of his passing, and we’re praying for his family and all who loved him,” Surratt said.

The former East Texas athlete was well-known before his tragic death.
Marshall, who was from Carthage, was on the Bulldogs football team. He recorded 252 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries during his career at Carthage High School.
At Carthage, he was named first-team all-district in 2013 and 2014, all-East Texas Super Team in 2014, All-State Honorable Mention in 2013, and Academic All-District in 2013. He was also on the Carthage football team that won the 2013 State Championship, according to information on East Texas A&M University’s website.
Marshall later played football for Texas A&M Commerce, Mary-Hardin Baylor, and Mt. San Antonio College in California.
