The ex-Cleveland Browns’ running back, Benjamin Gay, was pronounced dead on Monday, July 29, 2024, at the age of 44 but what was the cause of death of the former NFL star?
Brown was born on February 28, 1980, and only had to wait until 2001 to be selected into the top level of professional American Football when the Browns signed him after he went undrafted in the 2001 NFL Draft.
Whilst he only spent one season as a player in the NFL, serving as a practise squad member for the Indianapolis Colts in 2002, he rushed for 172 yards and one touchdown before being let go.
He had been a star at Spring High School in Texas and was named to USA Today’s first-team All-American before he headed to Garden City Community College and rushed for 1442 yards and 17 touchdowns in 1999.
With jobs as a bouncer and a brief stint with the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League, he was finally picked to the NFL in 2001 as the Browns’ third choice and on November 18, 2001, he got his career highlight.
Gay came into the team against the Baltimore Ravens on the road and did not disappoint as he carried 18 times for 56 yards and one touchdown in a 27-17 win on the Browns’ way to finishing the season as .438 and three wins behind the Ravens in the AFC Central.
