Losing a Dear Sibling

She might have started working in the entertainment industry at a young age, but things have not always come easily for this actress. The star and her older brother, Philip McKeon, appeared in over 65 commercials in around seven years.

When Philip landed a role in the 1976 television series, “Alice,” the family relocated to Los Angeles. Years later, tragedy struck when the actress lost him at 55 on December 10, 2019.

Nearly a month before his death, Philip’s sister unknowingly celebrated his last birthday. Posting a throwback photo of them posing together, she wrote, “A huge happy birthday to my big brother 🥳!! It’s been a tough time lately… but as we’ve always said…we’ll get through it together…love you Dude😎….and as always… our humble thanks to all our veterans 🇺🇸❤️💙. [sic]”

Weeks later, a publication revealed that Philip had died in the morning after battling a long illness. A source stated that “The Facts of Life” actress was struggling to come to terms with the loss. The insider shared, “She’s devastated. She and Philip were very, very close.”

The source added, “The whole family is going to cling together and find comfort in each other during this time. My heart goes out to them.” The loss was even harder to bear because just months earlier, the family and the then-53-year-old actress lost her father, Donald McKeon, in October.

Jeff Ballard, a spokesman, confirmed Philip’s death in a statement, saying, “We are all beyond heartbroken and devastated over Phil’s passing. His wonderful sense of humor, kindness and loyalty will be remembered by all who crossed his path in life.”

While Philip played Linda Lavin’s son Tommy Hyatt on “Alice” from 1976 until 1985, his sister portrayed the street-smart Joanna “Jo” Polniaczek on “The Facts of Life.” At 17 and 15, respectively, they were television’s dream teenage siblings.

Their father helped co-manage their careers, but the siblings lived like normal children despite having a combined income well into six figures. They were so close that they never displayed rivalry, allowing them to work peacefully and successfully for years.

Luckily, the actress had the support of her family after her losses, as she’d found love and started a family long before her brother and father’s passing.

Tackling the Show That Made Her Famous

During a December 2024 interview, she discussed her time on “The Facts of Life.” She jokingly admitted that although her character appeared to be a tomboy, she didn’t actually know how to fix or ride motorcycles.

The actress humorously pointed out that if you looked closely, you’d see she was “clinking around” aimlessly instead of actually fixing the bike. She also said she never tires of discussing her role on the show.

The celebrity praised the show, saying it “gave me life. It was a privilege…” She explained that starring in it brought some of the best times of her life, and she still loves the cast. The actress expressed how much she misses the late Charlotte Rae, who played Edna Garrett.

She described Charlotte as the cast’s “true North.” The celebrity also shared that the cast stays in touch through text, calling them her “family.” That same year, she returned to the stage with her new play, “Pen Pals,” reminiscent of the old sitcom.

In the play, the female characters have been friends for over 50 years. Viewers saw how the group became friends and family, from 14 to 60. While she appeared in many reunions with her castmates, she missed one a few years ago.

Despite her love and respect for “The Facts of Life,” the star did not attend its reenactment. The “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” reenactment of 1980s sitcoms took place in 2021. Lisa Whelchel, Mindy Cohn, and Kim Fields from “The Facts of Life” all participated. Whelchel wore an Eastland uniform and sang the classic theme song at the start of the sitcom.

When asked later what it was like reuniting with the old cast, Whelchel commented on her former co-star’s absence. She said, “Oh, always so good… We missed [her]… it was sad not to have the four of us together, but it’s always fun.”

Welchel explained the actress’s absence, saying, “[She] was home and they just recently moved and her kids just got into school, so it was difficult for her to make the trip out.” However, she confirmed they stay in touch: “We have a little group thread we call the ‘sisters thread.'”

The actress insisted that she isn’t like her former “Facts of Life” character, and Welchel confirmed it saying, “She is as much like Jo as I am like Blair, which is very little!” In 2025, Welchel’s former co-star is still being asked about the 1980s sitcom.

Without specifics, Philip’s sister revealed there were uncomfortable discussions on the show. They discussed what the cast members should eat, and their weight was also a frequent topic. The actress admitted, “Each one of us had to deal with things in our own way.”

She recalled how other actresses were questioned about their weight, despite many of the sitcom’s storylines revolving around puberty. The star reflected, “There’s so much development [during those years],” so having it “made [into] a thing” didn’t feel right.

Still, she acknowledged the nature of the industry, saying, “That’s why it’s called show business, it’s a business, and they wanted what they wanted. But we’re also human beings and the fact is everybody comes in all shapes and sizes and everybody needs to be represented.”

“There is no one ideal [body]. There should be an embrace of every body,” she concluded. One netizen reacted to her perspective on the show’s weight issues and remarked“I liked that show for the fact they looked like normal people.”

Someone else added“That’s because Hollywood has always portrayed supposedly normal people unrealistically, example Charlie’s Angels [sic].” However, a critic noted“It’s called television dear. You knew what you had signed up for. If you didn’t want to worry about your weight to keep your job, you should have applied for work at Gemco or Mervyns.”
