Analyst anoints Patrick Mahomes as NFL GOAT with potential Super Bowl 3-peat – “Tom Brady fans don’t want to hear that”

Patrick Mahomes is already making a strong case to be considered one of the greatest players in NFL history, having won three Super Bowl titles and being adjudged the game’s MVP in all of them.

But according to CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco, should he achieve the first-ever Super Bowl three-peat, then there should be no further discussion as to who between him and Tom Brady is the GOAT.

On Wednesday’s edition of “CBS Sports HQ”, the insider said:

“If they go for the 3-peat and get the 3-peat, Patrick Mahomes is the GOAT. Nobody’s ever done that in the Super Bowl era, so I think if they win it and he becomes the guy that leads them there, then he is the GOAT. I know Tom Brady fans don’t want to hear that, but that’s the reality.”

How Patrick Mahomes has changed Chiefs’ playoff home game fortunes

Another effect that can be seen in the Kansas City Chiefs‘ Mahomes era is how they have fared in home playoff games, as detailed by Tod Palmer, a reporter for NBC’s Kansas City affiliate KSHB.

The franchise spent its first two Super Bowl runs entirely on the road. Thus, its first home playoff game was the 1971 Divisional Round double overtime loss against the Miami Dolphins which stands as the longest game in NFL history at just over seven hours.

After that, they would not make the playoffs again for another 15 years – a Wild Card loss to the New York Jets. They would not host another playoff game until another five years later, a 10-6 Wild Card win against the then-Los Angeles Raiders.

In 1993, they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round on the strength of former Super Bowl MVPs Joe Montana and Marcus Allen. But after that came six straight losses over the next 24 years.

Low points from that time include a 30-7 rout against the Baltimore Ravens in the 2010-11 Wild Card, Steelers kicker Chris Boswell scoring a playoff-record six field goals in the 2016-17 Divisional Round and a blown 21-3 lead against the Tennessee Titans in the 2017-18 Wild Card that saw Marcus Mariota become just the second player to catch his own pass for a touchdown – and first in a playoff game.

Mahomes’ 2018 promotion ended that streak, as they defeated the Indianapolis Colts 31-13 in that season’s Divisional Round. Overall, they have gone 12-1 in home playoff games with him under center, the only defeat being in the 2021-22 AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
