BLOG: Chiefs put on the pads for first time at 2024 training camp

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KCTV) – For the first time at this year’s training camp, the Kansas City Chiefs have donned pads at practice.

Below are some notes and highlights from reporters at training camp:

INJURY UPDATE

Cornerback Nazeeh Johnson, who left practice Wednesday on a cart with a knee injury, was a full participant Friday. Wide receiver Justin Watson did not suit up in pads; he left practice Wednesday after injuring his foot during 7-on-7.

“We don’t really have a timeline on him yet,” head coach Andy Reid said of Watson after practice. “We’re just playing it by ear and see where it goes.”

Rookie receiver Xavier Worthy was back in action after missing the last three practices with strep throat. Safety Justin Reid continues to stay sidelined with a quad injury.

LEFT TACKLE BATTLE

One of the most-watched position battles of this year’s camp comes at left tackle. Rookie Kingsley Suamataia and second-year Wanya Morris are fighting for the starting spot. The pair rotated in with the presumptive starters during unpadded practices, though Suamataia got the majority of first-team reps Friday.

“He’s learning,” Reid said of Suamataia. “As long as he keeps working he’ll be fine.”

Mahomes isn’t loving a viral video of the Raiders bringing a Kermit the Frog puppet with the QB’s signature hairdo to practice.

“It’s still early in the year,” Mahomes said. “It’ll get handled when it gets handled.”

The Chiefs play in Las Vegas on Oct. 27. The Raiders come to Arrowhead on Nov. 29.

BUZZ WORTHY

A lot of eyes are on the wide receiver room this season. The group struggled with drops last season, but bolstered the room with rookie Xavier Worthy and veteran Hollywood Brown this offseason.

Both players have been connecting with Patrick Mahomes quickly, presenting a potential deep-ball threat for the back-to-back champs.

Notably, Kadarius Toney is getting plenty of reps with the first and second stringers.

“It’s a great group,” Mahomes said. “They all mesh well together. I’m excited for their future. The sky is the limit.”
