Chiefs fallout continues as Patrick Mahomes draws the anger of Clark Hunt

Winning is a way of life for the Kansas City Chiefs, and that way of life has been disrupted — however briefly.

After flirting with danger throughout the 2024 season, the Chiefs on Sunday fell to the Bills in Buffalo, suffering a 30-21 defeat that brought Kansas City‘s perfect start to a close. The 9-1 Chiefs are still in great position to claim the AFC West title and the conference’s top seed come playoff time, but for an organization that has gotten so used to winning every game, it is important for Kansas City to respond in the right way to this setback.

Hunt blasted for hypocrisy

It appears that some figures around the Chiefs franchise are handling the Bills loss better than others. Patrick Mahomes has spoken about using the loss as “fuel” for what’s to come; head coach Andy Reid is also hoping to use the defeat as a learning opportunity for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.

And then there’s team owner Clark Hunt, who was reportedly furious with the manner of the Chiefs’ loss on Sunday. In a since-deleted post on X/TwitterNFL reporter Darren Smith claimed that Hunt was “p***ed” at his team, and that might even be an “understatement”.

The post’s quick deletion casts a little doubt on Hunt’s mindset following the game in Orchard Park, but NFL fans on social media were quick to call out Hunt’s reaction to the Chiefs’ first loss in 16 games. Hunt has been crticized routinely for failing to invest in a successful team; though Mahomes and Travis Kelce have huge contracts, and Reid has job security for the remainder of the decade, Kansas City’s facilities regularly rank toward the bottom of the NFL for their amenities and modernity relative to the NFL’s other elite franchises.

Perhaps that is where Hunt should place his focus from here on out as Reid, Mahomes, and the rest of the Chiefs try to get back on track against the lowly Carolina Panthers in Week 12.
