As the best quarterback in the NFL, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is liable to get a favorable call from the officials every now and again. As arguably the most valuable player in the entire league, it behooves the league to call things in his favor more often than not, making sure that he is protected and successful.
However, what transpired in the first half of the Chiefs game vs. the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon might be crossing the line, according to a lot of NFL fans.
With the Broncos’ vaunted pass rush causing him to move off of his spot several times in the first half, Mahomes was overheard on the CBS broadcast making a plea to the refs after a play.
“Can you just please let me know if he is close?” Mahomes asked the official, referring to the pass-rushers closing in around him.
For a player seeking to gain an advantage, it is a totally normal ask. However, in a competitive game, it’s a bit crazy to ask a supposed impartial official for help. As you would expect, NFL fans destroyed Mahomes on social media for this request.
There’s nothing wrong with asking for the help, so long as the officials don’t actually subside to Mahomes’ desires and help him against the Broncos. However, we might see the Chiefs actually need the extra help, as they have fallen behind 14-3 against Denver, and Mahomes has been sacked twice thus far.
We’ll see if Mahomes can get some better pocket awareness, and how his conversations with the refs go from here on out in the rest of the game.
