49ers fans are fed up with Tom Brady’s San Francisco blunders

Even though Tom Brady grew up in San Mateo, he found the one way to piss off everyone from his home region while calling San Francisco 49ers games on Fox. In all three 49ers games Brady has called in his new job, he’s referred to the Niners as “San Fran” — a nickname for the region’s signature city that Bay Area residents universally loathe.

Of the many nicknames San Francisco has — and there are various opinions about “The City by the Bay,” “SF,” “Frisco” and more — the only thing most locals agree on is that “San Fran” is terrible and should never be uttered. Yet, somehow, a Bay Area product in one of the NFL’s premier announcing jobs is doing just that.

Each time Brady has said “San Fran” on a broadcast, he’s received scorn on social media. That cranked up several notches on Sunday, with one person calling it “gross every time he does it.” Longtime Bay Area broadcaster Brodie Brazil even quipped that Brady must be “trolling” by doing it so often.

Brady will call at least one more 49ers game this season, when the Niners head to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 24.
