Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes lands on injury report for the first time during 2024 NFL season

The Kansas City Chiefs completed their first practice session ahead of their Week 9 game on “Monday Night Football” against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Ahead of practice, Chiefs HC Andy Reid announced that WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, OT Ethan Driskell, and CB Nazeeh Johnson would be absent for the first practice session of the week.

Johnson, who is dealing with a concussion suffered in Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders, did participate in the team’s walkthrough which suggests he’s in Phase III of the NFL’s return-to-participation protocols.

The team had DE Mike Danna return to practice after missing the last two weeks due to injury. They also saw star QB Patrick Mahomes debut on the injury report for the first time this season, albeit as a full participant in practice.

Here’s a look at the first injury report of the week. . .

KEY: DNP = Did not participate | LP = Limited participation | FP = Full participation | NIR = Not injury related

Observations:

  • Chiefs HC Andy Reid said QB Patrick Mahomes had his ankle rolled up on during the game after the Week 8 win over the Raiders. His appearance on the injury report means he received treatment from the training staff for his ankle injury. The fact that he was a full participant in practice suggests it’s minor, but it’ll still be worth monitoring.
  • Two new defensive players landed on the injury report this week in LB Drue Tranquill and CB Trent McDuffie. Both were considered full participants in practice. Tranquill briefly left the Week 8 game with an injury.
  • Kareem Hunt was listed as limited during the team’s first practice session last week, so don’t worry too much about him. This is simply load management for a veteran player who has been getting a lot of work over the last few games.
  • Mike Danna is back in action as a limited participant in practice after missing the last two weeks due to injury. With the addition of his former Michigan teammate Joshua Uche, the team can probably ease Danna back into action.

Observations:

  • The Bucs are very banged up at wide receiver right now. Mike Evans is not expected to play this week and now Sterling Shepard is dealing with an injury. They’re also without Chris Godwin (IR). They could realistically be missing their top three players at the position in Week 9.
  • Linebacker is a position that the Bucs simply aren’t deep at. Lavonte David and DT Greg Gaines being non-participants to start the week could really hurt their run defense against Kansas City.
