Travis Kelce sparked widespread debate on social media on Thursday night when he hit out at fans questioning his support for MLB team Cleveland Guardians – and his outfit on a date night with Taylor Swift.
The Chiefs star appeared to be provoked by fans claiming he should have worn team merch when he went with the singer to see the Guardians play the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium earlier this week.
Kelce said on X: ‘I’ve been a cleveland sports fan my entire life… Make it back to countless amount of games over the years both Guards and Cavs just to enjoy these memories with my friends and family, WIN OR LOSE!! … and I don’t wear Cleveland gear one time and all of a sudden I’m not a real fan?!
‘Ask anybody that was in or around that suite on game 1 who I was cheering for, they’ll let you know I was there for the @CleGuardians.’
His impassioned reply left fans in hysterics, given the amount of rumor and speculation he is a subject to every day due to his romance with Swift, and they told him not read his mentions on social media.
One fan said in response: ‘I love that Travis Kelce has a million rumors spread about him every day and he doesn’t respond to any of them, but as soon as someone accuses him of being a fake Cleveland fan, he has to clear it up. thats (sic) a true Clevelander right there.’
A different response read: ‘TRAVIS DON’T READ TWITTER REPLIES I BEG OF YOU.’
Another fan said: ‘Travis, don’t bother with these dips***s …. And please for the love of everything, don’t get sucked into this hellscape.’
Kelce and Swift watched on at Yankee Stadium as Aaron Judge and his team beat the Guardians 5-2 in Game 1 of their playoff series.
The Yankees also won Game 2 but the Guardians responded with a sensational overtime victory on Thursday night to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Cleveland seemed destined to lose with Jhonkensy Noel at the plate at the bottom of the ninth, with two outs already on the board. But two strikes down, Noel hit a missile into the stands to take the game into overtime. From there, the Guardians won 7-5.
And it was that win that prompted Kelce to tweet in the first place, with the Super Bowl winner posting: ‘Playoff baseball baby!!!
‘Cleveland Guardians have the city absolutely ROCKIN TONIGHT!! What a game!’
The teams return to action on Friday night, with Kelce undoubtedly set to watch on.
Kelce and the Chiefs return to NFL action on Sunday in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl against San Francisco 49ers.
