{"id":9885,"date":"2024-10-07T02:53:56","date_gmt":"2024-10-07T02:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usdailys.com\/?p=9885"},"modified":"2024-10-07T02:53:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-07T02:53:56","slug":"heres-why-the-pittsburgh-steelers-dont-have-cheerleaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usdailys.com\/?p=9885","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s Why The Pittsburgh Steelers Don\u2019t Have Cheerleaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"mai-link-injected\" href=\"https:\/\/www.totalprosports.com\/nfl\/pittsburgh-steelers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a>\u00a0do not have cheerleaders.<\/p>\n<p>It is crazy to think about since the Pittsburgh Steelerettes were the first cheerleading squad in the National Football League, serving as the cheerleaders for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>They are one of only six\u00a0<a class=\"mai-link-injected\" href=\"https:\/\/www.totalprosports.com\/nfl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL<\/a>\u00a0teams without cheerleaders, along with the Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears,\u00a0<a class=\"mai-link-injected\" href=\"https:\/\/www.totalprosports.com\/nfl\/cleveland-browns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cleveland Browns<\/a>, Green Bay Packers, and New York Giants.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the Packers, when the two teams met in Super Bowl XLV, neither franchise had cheerleaders, as Green Bay did away with their cheerleaders in 1988 after market research indicated fans did not really care.<\/p>\n<p>The Steelers\u2019 cheerleading pioneers were part of the organization from 1961 until 1968.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s, the team\u2019s lack of cheerleaders ended after the girls wished to wear outfits that were more \u201cmodern\u201d and \u201cdaring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pittsburgh_Steelerettes#:~:text=The%20Pittsburgh%20Steelerettes%20were%20the,that%20do%20not%20have%20cheerleaders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>, the owner wasn\u2019t feeling it, so he decided to fire them instead.<\/p>\n<p>The cheerleaders\u2019 skirts were knee-length, and they wore black turtlenecks and white sneakers. Art Rooney was a devout Catholic who insisted that the cheerleaders maintain a high moral standard, so the women wanting to do away with what he liked ended them forever.<\/p>\n<p>They also wore helmets.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe first year, we wore hard helmets as part of our uniform\u2026 We started to look more and more like wholesome cheerleaders as time went on.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 Eleanor Lewis, Original Steelerette.<\/p>\n<p>Rooney was still not a huge fan of the squad and made it clear to the team that he expected wholesome, conservative performances.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was a mutual understanding between us and management that we did not sign on to become showgirls\u2026 It was definitely not like what would come with squads like the\u00a0<a class=\"mai-link-injected\" href=\"https:\/\/www.totalprosports.com\/nfl\/dallas-cowboys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dallas Cowboys<\/a>\u00a0cheerleaders.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Patricia Tanner, Steelerette.<\/p>\n<p>The last Steelerettes squad left the field after the 1969 season, and they haven\u2019t returned since.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; The\u00a0Pittsburgh Steelers\u00a0do not have cheerleaders.
