Travis Kelce\u2019s slow start to the 2024 season\u00a0continues to dominate sports media talk<\/a>\u00a0following his third straight underwhelming performance, a 30-yard, four-reception outing in Sunday night\u2019s\u00a022-17 win<\/a>\u00a0over the Falcons.<\/p>\n

While NBC\u2019s Cris Collinsworth\u00a0called out the lack of \u201cmagic\u201d<\/a>\u00a0between Kelce and star Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, former ESPN personality Todd McShay zoned in on other elements surrounding the All-Pro tight end\u2019s highly publicized life.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery show I watch, every pregame show, halftime show, postgame show, weekday show, every broadcast I watch for the last few weeks, it\u2019s like are we not allowed to say that he\u2019s out of shape, that he\u2019s been partying all offseason? He\u2019s been jet-setting around with the most famous person probably in the entire world, that\u2019s he drinking, going to the U.S. Open,\u201d\u00a0McShay said<\/a>\u00a0Monday on \u201cThe Ryen Russillo Podcast,\u201d referencing Kelce and girlfriend Taylor Swift\u2019s escapades earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 What I do know is, I want you to take a picture from preseason 2022 and then take a picture preseason 2024, they\u2019re barely the same human being, Ryen, and everyone\u2019s like, \u2018We got to get him the ball, why isn\u2019t he part of the offense?\u2019 The defense is double-covering.\u2019 Here\u2019s the thing, bottom line with Kelce: The coverage and the respect he gets is the same, the athlete is not. Now, is he going to work himself into shape during the season? Yeah, I\u2019m sure he will. He\u2019s an unbelievable competitor, he\u2019s one of the best to ever do it and he still finds a way to make a play or two here and there and shows up in some clutch moments, but he\u2019s not the same guy right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelce, now in his 12th NFL season with the Chiefs, has tallied eight receptions for 69 yards and zero touchdowns to open the year \u2014 one season after he failed to amass 1,000 total yards for the first time since 2015.<\/p>\n

Although the three-time Super Bowl champ\u00a0recently expressed that he stopped getting caught up with stats<\/a>\u00a0long ago, McShay pondered why some are dancing around certain critiques.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>\u201cI don\u2019t see the same explosiveness, I see him wearing down a little bit in games, it\u2019s okay, he\u2019ll work himself back into shape, it\u2019s not the first guy ever whose not quite in the elite shape that he was,\u201d said McShay,\u00a0who is nearing a deal to join The Ringer full-time after being laid off by ESPN last year.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you\u2019re sitting here and you\u2019re defending him, too. Is there some kind of message I\u2019m not getting from the league that you\u2019re not allowed to say he\u2019s not in the same shape, he\u2019s not able to produce at the highest level right now? And he\u2019ll probably work himself back into shape by Week 8, 9, 10 this season. Are we not allowed to say that?\u201d<\/p>\n

As McShay called attention to Kelce\u2019s off-field endeavors, he added, \u201cYou can\u2019t be doing all of those things and still be the same person physically as you were in 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 I\u2019m not blaming it on Taylor Swift, I\u2019m not blaming anything, all I\u2019m saying is when you win two Super Bowls, you got that whole tour that happens after the Super Bowl, he\u2019s the most commercialized guy, there\u2019s no one else doing more commercials I don\u2019t think in the league, he and Mahomes are up there, I think Kelce\u2019s doing more commercials and things, he\u2019s been at more events, doing more things socially. It\u2019s impossible to carry that schedule and still put in the same amount of time for football,\u201d McShay said.<\/p>\n

Even as the heat turns up on Kelce \u2013\u00a0who looked miserable on the bench<\/a>\u00a0Sunday in Atlanta \u2014 Mahomes has his back, with the quarterback elaborating on the tight end\u2019s minimal presence on offense thus far.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s crazy because teams still \u2014 the respect factor they have for Travis is just unreal. It\u2019s well-deserved,\u201d\u00a0Mahomes said<\/a>\u00a0as the Chiefs improved to 3-0. \u201cWe\u2019re calling a lot of plays for Travis and it\u2019s like two or three people are going to him. He understands \u2014 that\u2019s the great thing about him is he wants to make an impact on the game but he wants to win at the end of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Chiefs face the Chargers (2-1) in Los Angeles on Sunday.<\/p>\n
