After two years at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, the 2024 Video Music Awards moved back to New York \u2014 but not Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan or Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Instead, the VMAs were held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, NY.<\/p>\n

But while New York has always brought out the best in the awards show \u2014 which\u00a0began 40 years ago on Sept. 14, 1984<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 the location probably wouldn\u2019t have made much of a difference this year anyway with its decreasing relevance.<\/p>\n

But while it\u2019s no longer the must-attend affair that it once was \u2014 as MTV\u2019s disconnect from music widens \u2014\u00a0 the VMAs are not dead yet. Although there was nothing on Wednesday night that approached the iconic moments of years past \u2014 and the awards themselves have become even more of an afterthought to the performances \u2014 they still had the almighty Taylor Swift, who\u00a0won her fifth Video of the Year award<\/a> for \u201cFortnight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Worst: Eminem<\/h2>\n

<\/span><\/span>It made sense for\u00a0Eminem to open the show<\/a>: After all, he\u2019s VMAs royalty \u2014 and he had six nominations coming into the night on the strength of his \u201cHoudini\u201d video from his album \u201cThe Death of Slim Shady\u00a0 (Coup De Grace).\u201d But his lookalike-laden throwback to his 2000 performance \u2014 which segued from \u201cHoudini\u201d to \u201cSomebody Save Me\u201d (with prerecorded footage of Jelly Roll) \u2014 was a reminder that, 24 years later, the VMAs aren\u2019t the same anymore.<\/p>\n

First off, props to Tay for showing up at the VMAs, again\u00a0adding much-needed relevance and star power to the proceedings<\/a>. And leading with 10 nominations, she was most certainly assured of not going home empty-handed when she and Post Malone won the first televised award of the night: Best Collaboration for \u201cFortnight.\u201d But a day after making a political statement by\u00a0endorsing Kamala Harris for president<\/a>, Swift also remembered 9\/11 in a way that put all of the festivities into perspective.<\/p>\n

After getting an introduction by Paris Hilton \u2014 who threw in her catchphrase \u201cThat\u2019s hot\u201d\u2014 Lisa was absolutely not. This K-pop singer was more of a K-flop when she performed with an army of dancers who couldn\u2019t save her from the pure cheesiness that left us all wondering how she even got the invite.<\/p>\n

Best: Teddy Swims<\/h2>\n

Although it is a bit of a mystery why he was relegated to the Extended Play Stage, this singer-songwriter was a welcome rush of soulful vocals \u2014 and gritty feels \u2014 when he sang his mega-hit \u201cLose Control\u201d and \u201cThe Door.\u201d He certainly upstaged Shawn Mendes, who had a main-stage spot to perform his new single \u201cNobody Knows.\u201d<\/p>\n

Best: Sabrina Carpenter<\/h2>\n

In a performance that reminded you about how the VMAs have\u00a0showcased the hot artists of the moment in the past<\/a>, Carpenter performed a medley of \u201cPlease Please Please,\u201d \u201cTaste\u201d and \u201cEspresso\u201d with some dancing astronauts making like Moonmen.<\/p>\n

Worst: Katy Perry\/Orlando Bloom<\/h2>\n

After the TMI the couple has been sharing, it was\u00a0a little cringey for Orlando Bloom to introduce<\/a>\u00a0fianc\u00e9e Katy Perry\u2019s Video Vanguard performance and present her with the award. It felt a little too nepotistic when there had to be somebody who wasn\u2019t her baby daddy who could do the honors. It took away from her moment \u2014 and, including that extended smooch, gave us more couple creepiness that we didn\u2019t need. And her performance was nothing to roar about either.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0getting into it with a photographer<\/a>\u00a0on the red carpet, breakout artist Roan brought a different kind of fire to the VMAs stage in her performance of \u201cGood Night, Babe!\u201d Along with Carpenter, Roan felt like the right kind of artist to be there at the right moment. It helped make up for the fact that other top acts \u2014 such as Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo and SZA \u2014 were MIA. And then, to boot, she went on to win Best New Artist, giving an empowering, queer-positive speech.<\/p>\n

Worst: Megan The Stallion<\/h2>\n

From Nicki Minaj to Doja Cat, the VMAs have been doubling up with hosts as performers in recent years. It\u2019s almost if they need to sweeten the deal to get someone to commit \u2014 or else they\u2019re simply hurting for enough big names to go around. But Megan Thee Stallion was hardly worthy of pulling double duty. She simply wasn\u2019t much of a host, although she fared better when\u00a0she performed a medley.<\/a>\u00a0But it was all more Megan than we needed.<\/p>\n

On a night when rock was sorely missing, leave it to 60-year-old Kravitz to swoop in and crank it up with \u201cAre You Gonna Go My Way,\u201d \u201cHuman\u201d \u2014 for which he won Best Rock Video \u2014 and a revamped \u201cFly Away\u201d with Migos\u2019 Quavo that had us vibing again 26 years later.<\/p>\n

Worst: Camila Cabello<\/h2>\n

The former Fifth Harmony singer gave a melodramatic performance of\u00a0 her new single \u201cGodspeed\u201d \u2014 a song that nobody knows or cares about yet \u2014 that was staged as if she was in a cage. It was almost enough to make you wish that her ex Mendes went up there and saved her with a bit of \u201cSe\u00f1orita.\u201d<\/p>\n
