Beyonc\u00e9\u00a0deserves to\u00a0finally\u00a0lasso herself an album of the year win.<\/p>\n

Late last month, the music superstar, 42, released her eighth studio album,\u00a0Cowboy Carter, which serves as the second installment in a planned trilogy of albums following 2022\u2019s\u00a0Renaissance.<\/p>\n

The LP, like many of Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s works, blends a diverse mix of musical genres, and it is conceptualized as a radio broadcast by the fictional KNTRY Radio Texas, with country superstars\u00a0Dolly Parton,\u00a0Willie Nelson\u00a0and\u00a0Linda Martell\u00a0acting as\u00a0disc jockeys.<\/p>\n

The 27-track album features collaborations with big names including\u00a0Miley Cyrus\u00a0and\u00a0Post Malone\u00a0\u2014 plus Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s 6\u00bd-year-old daughter\u00a0Rumi\u00a0\u2014 as well as those from lesser-known Black country artists such as\u00a0Tanner Adell,\u00a0Brittney Spencer,\u00a0Tiera Kennedy,\u00a0Reyna Roberts,\u00a0Shaboozey\u00a0and\u00a0Willie Jones.\u00a0Stevie Wonder,\u00a0Paul McCartney,\u00a0Nile Rodgers,\u00a0Jon Batiste,\u00a0Gary Clark Jr.\u00a0and\u00a0Rhiannon Giddens, meanwhile, perform instruments on various tracks.<\/p>\n

Looking at the album now, and looking ahead to the\u00a02025 Grammy Awards, Nicholas Rice, a Senior News Editor for PEOPLE, highlights why Beyonc\u00e9 deserves to take home the coveted album of the year honor for\u00a0Cowboy Carter.<\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9 has been nominated for album of the year four times over the past two decades \u2014 in 2010 for\u00a0I Am \u2026 Sasha Fierce,\u00a0in 2015 for\u00a0Beyonc\u00e9, in 2017 for\u00a0Lemonade\u00a0and in 2023 for\u00a0Renaissance.\u00a0(The nominees for the 2025 Grammys will be announced sometime later this year, following the eligibility period, which runs from Sept. 16, 2023, through Aug. 30, 2024, per\u00a0Billboard.)<\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s latest project has received universal acclaim from both fans and critics, who praised the star\u2019s expansion into the country genre.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0Metacritic, a website that collects reviews of media through reviews from sources such as magazines and websites,\u00a0Cowboy Carter\u00a0scored an\u00a0impressive score\u00a0of 92\/100 based on\u00a020\u00a0critic reviews.<\/p>\n

Rolling Stone, for example, praised the LP as having \u201cBeyonc\u00e9\u2019s best vocal work on record,\u201d adding that the album was \u201cproduced flawlessly.\u201d\u00a0Variety, meanwhile, called\u00a0Cowboy Carter\u00a0a \u201cmasterpiece of sophisticated vocal arranging,\u201d also describing it as \u201ca 27-course meal\u201d that is \u201cdifficult to describe in whole, but endlessly easy to digest, serving by serving.\u201d<\/p>\n

While many praised\u00a0Cowboy Carter\u00a0for its impressive vocals, creative concept and clear flow, Beyonc\u00e9 was also celebrated for stepping into what is seen by many as a heavily white genre as a Black woman.<\/p>\n

In the LP\u2019s first track, \u201cAmerican Requiem,\u201d the mother of three reminds listeners of her country roots growing up in Texas, singing, \u201cUsed to say I spoke too country \/ And the rejection came, said I wasn\u2019t country \u2019nough \/ Said I wouldn\u2019t saddle up, but \/ If that ain\u2019t country, tell me what is?\u201d<\/p>\n

Martell, 82, who begins \u201cSpaghettii,\u201d touches upon the idea that artists can only be limited to certain subjects, stating ahead of the tune, \u201cGenres are a funny little concept, aren\u2019t they? \/\u00a0In theory, they have a simple definition that\u2019s easy to understand \/ But in practice, well, some may feel confined.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9 not only highlighted her ability to be a musical chameleon with this project, but also used her space to uplift other Black artists, allowing them to showcase their own vocal abilities and stories while illustrating how music truly sees no color.<\/p>\n

But the music icon still knew that not everyone in the entertainment scene \u2014 or larger world, for that matter \u2014 would be as accepting or welcoming of her trying to stray from the boxes that she has been put into throughout her career.<\/p>\n

In a past Instagram post, Beyonc\u00e9 thanked fans for their early support of\u00a0Cowboy Carter\u00a0and\u00a0detailed how it came to be. According to the star, the project was five years in the making and was \u201cborn out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed.\u201d (Many fans speculated the event Beyonc\u00e9 was referring to was the 2016\u00a0CMA Awards, where she\u00a0performed her country tune \u201cDaddy Lessons\u201d\u00a0off her album\u00a0Lemonade\u00a0alongside\u00a0The Chicks.)<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it was very clear that I wasn\u2019t,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 continued. \u201cBut, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of country music and studied our rich musical archive. It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cThe criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me. act ii is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.\u201d<\/p>\n

And with that, Beyonc\u00e9 knew she had a story to tell, and\u00a0Cowboy Carter\u00a0was released on March 29.<\/p>\n

It eventually\u00a0broke several chart records\u00a0and\u00a0debuted at No. 1 on the\u00a0Billboard\u00a0200 chart, which marked Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s eighth consecutive No. 1 album. (It was also the first album by a Black woman to top\u00a0Billboard\u2018s Top Country Albums\u00a0chart.)<\/p>\n

Spotify\u00a0later\u00a0announced on social media\u00a0that\u00a0Cowboy Carter\u00a0became the platform\u2019s most-streamed album in a single day in 2024 so far.<\/p>\n

The LP also earned the title of most streams of a country album by a female artist on Amazon Music, and it also had the biggest debut on the streaming platform,\u00a0the company\u00a0revealed on social media.<\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9 initially surprised fans by\u00a0announcing her new album\u00a0during the\u00a02024 Super Bowl\u00a0in early February.<\/p>\n

At the time, the singer appeared in a Verizon commercial, in which she joked about her internet-breaking abilities. She then\u00a0posted the trailer\u00a0for her new album on Instagram, sending fans into a frenzy.<\/p>\n

After the viral announcement, Beyonc\u00e9 dropped two singles from the album, \u201cTexas Hold \u2018Em\u201d and \u201c16 Carriages.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTexas Hold \u2018Em\u201d eventually\u00a0hit\u00a0No. 1 on\u00a0Billboard\u2018s Hot Country Songs chart, which allowed Beyonc\u00e9 to make history as the first Black female artist to ever reach the top spot there.<\/p>\n

Despite the success of the two singles, Beyonc\u00e9 fans were still left mostly in the dark about\u00a0Cowboy Carter, which, at the time, was referred to simply as\u00a0Act II, given that the singer had yet to reveal the LP\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

But, weeks before the album was set to drop, Beyonc\u00e9 revealed the title by simply adding it and the release date to her Instagram bio and posting a shot of a saddle with a red, white and blue sash that read \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d on her\u00a0Instagram Stories.<\/p>\n

Not long after, Beyonc\u00e9 then revealed the album\u2019s official artwork \u2014 a photo of herself wearing a red, white and blue outfit on a horse and holding up an American flag.<\/p>\n

The album cover is reminiscent to that of the one she chose for\u00a0Renaissance, which features her sitting on top of a luminous horse.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year at the 2024 Grammy Awards,\u00a0JAY-Z\u00a0was honored with the 2nd annual\u00a0Dr. Dre\u00a0Global Impact Award \u2014 in recognition of his musical legacy \u2014 and used his acceptance speech to\u00a0call out the organization that honored him in defense of his wife.<\/p>\n

Questioning the process behind the voted categories, the rapper, 54, said, \u201cWe want y\u2019all to get it right. At least getting close to right. And obviously it\u2019s subjective \u2026 because, you know, it\u2019s music, and it\u2019s opinion-based.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, seemingly referring to Beyonc\u00e9, he continued, \u201cI don\u2019t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn\u2019t work. Think about that. The most Grammys, never won album of the year. That doesn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

While there is still plenty of time ahead of the 2025 Grammys, and before Beyonc\u00e9 will potentially even lock in a nomination for the album of the year category, it\u2019s clear that the universal acclaim, Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s dedication to her craft and her fearlessness to step into any musical territory prove her worthy of finally clinching the long overdue honor.<\/p>\n

And yet, even if she doesn\u2019t, Beyonc\u00e9 will continue to shine, as she points out on one of the tracks on\u00a0Cowboy Carter, singing: \u201cA-O-T-Y, I ain\u2019t win (That\u2019s cool) \/ I ain\u2019t stuntin\u2019 \u2019bout them \/ Take that s\u2014 on the chin \/ Come back and f\u2014 up the pen.\u201d<\/p>\n
