UN Suspends United States Under Article 5 Following Condemnation of Trump\u2019s Venezuela Military Action \u2014 New York \u2014 In an unprecedented and historic move, the United Nations has voted to suspend the United States from certain rights and privileges of membership under Article 5 of the UN Charter, following its formal condemnation of former President Donald Trump\u2019s unilateral military actions in Venezuela and the capture of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/p>\n

The decision, approved by the UN General Assembly after a recommendation from the Security Council, marks the first time the United States\u2014a founding member of the United Nations\u2014has faced suspension under Article 5.<\/p>\n

The provision allows for suspension when a member state is subject to enforcement action for actions deemed inconsistent with the principles of the UN Charter.
