While Kim Kardashian spoke up for her eldest daughter getting an unusual piercing, a doctor has issued a stern warning.<\/strong><\/p>\n

While piercings are perfectly legal and safe… well, most of the time… when it comes to minors, there\u2019s always going to be a strong reaction to their choices.<\/p>\n

Kim Kardashian’s<\/a>\u00a0daughter,\u00a0North West,<\/a>\u00a0is just 12-years-old and recently\u00a0caused a social media storm<\/a>\u00a0after showing off her latest piercing.<\/p>\n

The reason it has gained so much traction is because it\u2019s a \u2018derma piercing\u2019, which isn\u2019t your typical body modification – especially in minors.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s basically a bar that goes under her skin below her knuckle of her finger, with a bar and a small silver ball on each end securing it in place. It\u2019s quite popular for those who like to modify their bodies, but it isn\u2019t without its risks.<\/p>\n

People in social media\u00a0comments<\/a>\u00a0have since been worried about the piercing and how young North is.<\/p>\n

One wrote: “I get ear piercings but this is actually crazy,” as another said: “Let children be children!”<\/p>\n

This prompted Kim to respond to a TikTok video on her and North’s joint account,\u00a0@kimandnorth<\/a>, simply penning: “It’s okay.”<\/p>\n

Now, a doctor has spoken up and issued a fresh warning in light on her piercing.<\/p>\n

Dr Donald Grant, GP and Senior Clinical Advisor at\u00a0The Independent Pharmacy<\/a>, revealed to UNILAD that it\u2019s a \u2018risky\u2019 choice for anyone to make.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cDermal piercings, particularly those placed on the finger, carry risks that can easily be underestimated or attributed to more familiar concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained that people can miss the \u2018early signs of irritation or rejection\u2019 and believe it is \u2018nothing more than dry skin, a healing delay, or a minor knock to the area.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThese symptoms may also be mistaken for an allergic reaction to jewellery, simple overuse of the hands, or mild contact dermatitis,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

The reason these piercings are so risky when on a finger is because it is \u2018vulnerable\u2019 to things like \u2018snagging, pressure and constant movement, making complications far more likely\u2019, said the expert.<\/p>\n

Despite being just 12, North West is very experimental when it comes to fashion and style (TikTok\/@kimandnorth)<\/cite><\/div>\n

He continued: \u201cThe area is frequently exposed to bacteria through everyday activities, and even small breaks in the surrounding skin can allow an infection to take hold. Signs may include increasing redness, warmth, swelling or an unusual discharge, and these can worsen if left unaddressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also the issue of regular hand washing stopping the healing process, which can aggravate it.<\/p>\n

While he did mention that there is \u2018no conclusive evidence that younger individuals\u2019 skin is more likely to reject a piercing due to age alone\u2019, he said it\u2019s mainly about the \u2018placement of the piercing, the quality and material of the jewellery, and the standard of aftercare, all of which apply to people of any age\u2019.<\/p>\n

The doc warned: \u201cAnyone experiencing persistent redness, tenderness, changes in the position of the anchor or signs of\u00a0skin infection<\/a>\u00a0should seek advice from a trained piercing professional or their GP, who can recommend the most appropriate course of action.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
