An expert has shared an unsettling warning as US national debt reaches an eye-watering $38 trillion, US Treasury Department data reveals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the debt stood at $34 trillion in January 2024, it rose to $35 trillion in July 2024 and $36 trillion in November 2024.<\/p>\n

The most recent boost comes\u00a0amid the latest government shutdown<\/a>, which experts believe could be one of the longest in\u00a0US\u00a0<\/a>history.<\/p>\n

Following the\u00a0news<\/a>, experts have warned that the recent debt rise is a ‘troubling sign’.<\/p>\n

Government shutdowns can increase the national debt because they often impact economic productivity. For example, the BBC\u00a0explains<\/a>\u00a0that approvals for loans and permits can be delayed, as well as reviews of potential stock listings.<\/p>\n

‘We are adding debt faster than ever’<\/strong><\/h2>\n

One report has estimated that the cost of the current shutdown could be pricey.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe estimate that each week of shutdown would reduce US GDP growth by 0.1 percentage points (ppt) in Q4 (in annualized terms), translating into a $7 billion weekly hit to the economy,\u201d a report by EY Parthenon explained.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Michael A. Peterson, CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, said in a\u00a0statement<\/a>: “Reaching $38 trillion in debt during a government shutdown is the latest troubling sign that lawmakers are not meeting their basic fiscal duties.<\/p>\n

“If it seems like we are adding debt faster than ever, that’s because we are. We passed $37 trillion just two months ago, and the pace we’re on is twice as fast as the rate of growth since 2000.”<\/p>\n
