President Donald Trump made a dig at Volodymyr Zelenskyy in their latest meeting as he was questioned about what weapons the US would be giving Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ukrainian<\/a> President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> met with Donald Trump<\/a> on Friday (October 18) and hoped to get a definite answer on what more weapons his country could be receiving from the US<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But things didn\u2019t exactly go to plan for Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n

He was hoping to have Trump confirm that the US would supply Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine in its fight with Russia <\/a>but Trump appeared to sidestep the question when pressed by the media.<\/p>\n

The weapons possess a significantly longer range than any other missiles in Ukraine’s arsenal, holding the potential to revolutionise the situation.<\/p>\n

Trump even implied that the Ukrainian leader had planted the question.<\/p>\n

A reporter asked Trump directly whether the US would be supplying Tomahawk missiles and the president interrupted to ask who he was with, to be told the reporter was with Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Trump replied: \u201cWe\u2019re going to be talking about that, that\u2019s why we\u2019re here.<\/p>\n

\u201cFair question\u2014 exactly as he told you to say it. But we\u2019re gonna be talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t exactly clear why Trump came to this conclusion or whether Zelenskyy actually had the question planted.<\/p>\n

Trump did make it clear he wasn\u2019t saying no to the option of supplying Tomahawks but would seemingly prefer if it didn\u2019t come to that.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cTomahawks are a big deal. But one thing I have to say, we want Tomahawks, also. We don\u2019t want to be giving away things that we need to protect our country.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully, we\u2019ll be able to get the war over without thinking about Tomahawks. I think we\u2019re fairly close to that.<\/p>\n

Zelenskyy noted Trump hadn’t said yes about supplying the missiles he wanted but he also didn’t say no (Viktor Kovalchuk\/Global Images Ukraine via Getty Images)<\/cite><\/div>\n

Despite Trump not formally saying what would be happening in the future, in an interview with NBC News after the meeting, Zelenskyy made it clear he was optimistic.<\/p>\n

He said he was aware that Trump was concerned that the use of Tomahawk missiles could simply be considered an escalation of the war.<\/p>\n

This comes ahead of Trump\u2019s meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin<\/a> following a productive phone call.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIt’s good that President Trump didn’t say ‘no’, but for today, didn’t say ‘yes’.<\/p>\n

“I think that Putin [is] afraid that United States will deliver us Tomahawks. And I think that he [is] really afraid that we will use them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
