But just after 7:30 a.m., the device detonated. The blast so powerful it was felt for blocks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\" style=\"margin: 8px 0; clear: both;\">\n<div id=\"weverydaystories.com_responsive_2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\">\n<div id=\"weverydaystories.com_responsive_2\" data-google-query-id=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cIt was like a .1 earthquake,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0one witness recalled.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt really shook, and it felt like something was terribly wrong.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The explosion killed <strong>Detective Joshua Kelley-Eklund<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Detective William Osborn<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Detective Victor Lemus<\/strong>. Sheriff\u00a0<strong>Robert Luna<\/strong>\u00a0said:<em>\u00a0\u201cThis is unfortunately the largest loss of life for us as the LA County Sheriff\u2019s Department since 1857.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><\/figure>\n<p>The three men brought decades of experience and dedication to the department \u2014 and left behind grieving families.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Detective Joshua Kelley-Eklund<\/strong>: a field training officer, narcotics investigator, and father of seven.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Detective William Osborn<\/strong>: a trusted mentor in arson and bomb squad investigations, survived by his wife, a fellow detective, and their six children.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Detective Victor Lemus<\/strong>: a seasoned K-9 handler and arson investigator, survived by his detective wife and their three daughters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Together, the deputies represented\u00a0<strong>74 years of service<\/strong>\u00a0to Los Angeles County.<\/p>\n<p>An emotional procession followed the tragedy, with colleagues and family members standing shoulder to shoulder as their flag-draped caskets were carried.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-5\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Sheriff Luna praised the fallen officers\u2019 dedication:\u00a0<em>\u201cToday puts a face to how dangerous these men and women\u2019s job actually is on a daily basis and how something can go tragically wrong at any moment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The investigation into the deadly blast is ongoing and could take months. Law enforcement sources say a homeowner in Santa Monica was cleaning out a garage when they found items resembling grenades. CBS News reports the sheriff\u2019s bomb squad took at least one to the training facility, where the team was working to render it safe when it exploded.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the department continues to grieve. Vigils and tributes across Los Angeles County have honored the deputies not just as officers, but as fathers, mentors, and friends.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\"><\/div>\n<p>For their families, 16 children now growing up without their fathers, the loss is immeasurable.
