The mystery bearded man who\u00a0appeared to be celebrating in the crowd<\/a>\u00a0moments after\u00a0Charlie Kirk was shot<\/a>\u00a0claimed he wasn\u2019t cheering the horrifying violence, but shouting \u201cUSA\u201d to create a \u201cdistraction\u201d that might help \u201csave lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

A man going by David on X, who claims to be the person seen in the viral video filmed at the Utah Valley University event, posted a two-minute statement in which he attempts to explain himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard a sharp crack at first I thought it might have been fireworks or a disruptive prank,\u201d the man says, appearing to be wearing the same tan-colored backwards cap as the man apparently celebrating in the video.<\/p>\n

Charlie Kirk was fatally shot by alleged assassin Tyler Robinson at the Utah Valley University event on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025.via REUTERS<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>\u201cI looked up to the horizon for smoke. When none appeared, I realized it must have been a firearm,\u201d he said in a monotone voice, his eyes seeming to dart back and forth as if reading the statement as he stumbled over some of the words.<\/p>\n

The alleged assassin Tyler Robinson was arrested on Friday in connection to the shooting that killed Kirk.AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

He said based on a friend\u2019s reaction he \u201cbelieved Charlie had been gravely injured,\u201d and \u201cinstinctively checked the security team\u2019s movement\u201d before rising to his feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stood and shouted \u2018USA,\u2019 not as a provocation, but to project strength, encourage others, and create a distraction that might help calm panic or even save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
