Following a stern warning from \u201cThe View\u201d alum Meghan McCain, the talk show\u2019s current hosts held a somber discussion about the\u00a0Charlie Kirk shooting<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Whoopi Goldberg said the shooting was \u201cbeyond devastating\u201d on Thursday\u2019s show \u2014 shortly after McCain\u00a0took to X to write,\u00a0<\/a>\u201cIf my former colleagues at\u00a0The View\u00a0have even three brain cells left between all of them, they will do nothing but attempt to be even mildly decent this morning to the millions of heartbroken conservatives in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though the ABC hosts didn\u2019t address whether they\u2019d seen the tweet, Goldberg told the audience, \u201cOur hearts, of course, go out to the family of Charlie Kirk, who was\u00a0shot and killed yesterday\u00a0<\/a>on a college campus in Utah.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goldberg went on to question, \u201cIsn\u2019t it a fundamental part of being an American that we are able to express our opinions to each other without fear, without this kind of horror happening? And it seems to be something we are seeing more and more of.\u201d<\/p>\n

The somber conversation came after Meghan McCain warned her former co-hosts to be mindful of the \u201cmillions of heartbroken conservatives in this country.\u201dThe View<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>She continued, \u201cIt\u2019s not even left or right, it\u2019s just people being taken out because of their beliefs or their thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alyssa Farah Griffin expressed sympathy for Kirk\u2019s wife, Erika, and their two young children following the shooting, which took place as the Turning Point USA co-founder was engaging with students at Utah Valley University, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen, regardless of your politics, we have got to get to a place in this country where we see people we disagree with not as our enemy but as fellow Americans with different viewpoints we are willing to engage,\u201d the talk show host said.<\/p>\n

Sara Haines lamented, \u201cThe irony of a man who would go across the country to college campuses \u2014 and his series was called \u2018Prove Me Wrong.\u2019 He would talk to people openly who disagreed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haines recalled Kirk\u2019s own words, \u201cWhen we stop talking, that\u2019s when things get bad.\u201d She added, \u201cI know all of us agree on that part, there\u2019s never a place for political violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griffin hoped the killing wouldn\u2019t have \u201ca chilling effect \u2014 whether you\u2019re left or right \u2014 on your ability to speak your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goldberg agreed, saying she hopes \u201cthat young Republicans never forget that they have a voice.\u201d Joy Behar recalled \u201cscary times,\u201d including the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Robert F. Kennedy in the \u201960s.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe survived it and got better,\u201d Behar said. \u201cI think we will again. We\u2019re having a traumatic period right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kirk, 31, died Wednesday after a sniper shot rang out during the conservative activist\u2019s first stop on his \u201cAmerican Comeback Tour\u201d of college campuses.<\/p>\n

The moment \u2014 which was widely disseminated via social media \u2014 saw the influential commentator slump over before being taken to a local hospital, where he died. The killer, who apparently\u00a0shot Kirk from a nearby campus rooftop<\/a>\u00a0before fleeing the chaotic scene,\u00a0is still at large<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the hours after Kirk\u2019s death, celebrities\u00a0expressed their outrage and dismay<\/a>\u00a0at the deadly attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cMurdered for having a different opinion from somebody else, different ideology from somebody else,\u201d Charlie Sheen said during an appearance on Joe Rogan\u2019s podcast on Wednesday. \u201cRest in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
