Comcast\u2019s top brass slammed MSNBC\u2019s coverage of the\u00a0killing of conservative activist Charlier Kirk<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 including \u201cinsensitive\u201d and \u201cinappropriate\u201d remarks by analyst Matthew Dowd, who was fired on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The memo, which was signed by Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, Comcast president Mike Cavanagh and Mark Lazarus, CEO of Versant \u2014 the spinoff company that includes MSNBC \u2014 was circulated to Comcast and NBCUniversal staff on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou may have seen that MSNBC recently ended its association with a contributor who made an unacceptable and insensitive comment about this horrific event,\u201d the memo said.<\/p>\n

Matthew Dowd said on MSNBC that Kirk has pushed \u201chate speech\u201d when asked about the shooting.MSNBC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cThat coverage was at odds with fostering civil dialogue and being willing to listen to the points of view of those who have differing opinions. We should be able to disagree, robustly and passionately, but, ultimately, with respect. We need to do better.\u201d<\/p>\n

The execs added that staffers must \u201cmaintain a respectful exchange of ideas\u201d even if they do not agree with the late Kirk\u2019s political views.<\/p>\n

They added that \u201csomething essential has fractured in our public discourse,\u201d and that their company has a \u201cresponsibility to help mend it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kirk was shot and killed Wednesday at an event at Utah Valley College<\/a>, prompting a media frenzy and manhunt for the conservative activist\u2019s killer.<\/p>\n

During\u00a0MSNBC\u2019s live coverage of the shooting<\/a>, anchor Katy Tur asked Dowd about \u201cthe environment in which a shooting like this happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dowd answered: \u201cHe\u2019s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that\u2019s the unfortunate environment we are in.\u201d<\/p>\n

The analyst\u2019s remarks sparked outrage online and prompted\u00a0MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler to issue an apology on Thursday and fire Dowd<\/a>, whose comments she called \u201cinappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comcast \u2014 and other major media companies \u2014 have been under fire for biased coverage by President Trump and his administration.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0\u201cFox & Friends\u201d\u00a0on Friday, Trump commented on the firing of Dowd and MSNBC\u2019s coverage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are talking about radical left networks and cable channels, horrible channels, like MS \u2014 I always call it DNC \u2014 because it is somehow affiliated with the Democrat National Committee,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS \u2014 they\u2019re all terrible. Absolutely terrible and unfair. But even they have been giving it, like, \u2018This can\u2019t be allowed to happen.’\u201d<\/p>\n
