Late Colts owner Jim Irsay privately grappled with a relapse that he and team execs shielded from the public ahead of his death in May<\/a> at the age of 65, according to a bombshell report.<\/p>\n

Irsay, who had long been candid about his battle with substance abuse, \u201cspent the last two years of his life in the throes of a relapse,\u201d The Washington Post reported<\/a> Thursday, with the report also alleging the NFL exec was prescribed ketamine from a private doctor.<\/p>\n

That doctor \u201csigned Irsay\u2019s death certificate, stating the cause was cardiac arrest,\u201d per the report.<\/p>\n

Those close to Irsay had relayed concerns over the treatment Irsay was receiving from California-based addiction specialist Harry Haroutunian, who was with Irsay at the time of his death.<\/p>\n

The report states that Haroutunian prescribed over 200 hundred opioid pills before Irsay overdosed on two separate occasions in December 2023 \u2014 once at his Indianapolis home and another at a rental home in Miami.<\/p>\n

At the time, cops suspected that Irsay had suffered an \u201coverdose.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

However, both Irsay and the Colts publicly denied that was the case. The team described Irsay\u2019s issues as a \u201csevere respiratory illness\u201d and Irsay claimed he was simply recovering from back surgery.<\/p>\n

When a Colts exec called the 911 that night, they did not mention pills or drug use, just that Irsay\u2019s heart may be failing, The Washington Post reported.<\/p>\n

People with knowledge of Irsay\u2019s relapses said the treatment eventually escalated to ketamine injections in the months prior to his death.<\/p>\n

\u201cI dedicated 18 months of my life to try to care for him \u2026 as a brother,\u201d Haroutunian told the Washington Post in a phone interview \u2014\u00a0but later did not respond to emails that detailed the paper\u2019s reporting.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did everything we could to make him as comfortable as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Irsay\u2019s three daughters \u2014\u00a0Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson \u2014 have since taken over the Colts in the wake of his death.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur Dad was open about his battles with addiction and mental health. He never claimed to be perfect,\u201d the Colts co-owners wrote. \u201cThe media is not the place to address inquiries about information which is disputed, lacks essential context, or involves private medical matters.\u201d<\/p>\n
