Hunter Simoncic, 26, died after he was struck by a suspect&#8217;s vehicle Tuesday near the Kansas City, Kansas, Community College campus.<\/p>\n<p>Around 12:30 a.m., police were dispatched to the 7700 block of Everett on shots fired. Police said the alert came from the department&#8217;s gunshot detection system.<\/p>\n<p>Upon arrival, officers located an unconscious man in a truck. But as police approached, he woke up and fled the scene.<\/p>\n<p>A brief pursuit ensued until the driver abandoned the truck and entered another vehicle, which was stashed in the woods. Police believe both vehicles were stolen.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"Figure\">\n<div class=\"Figure-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto; display: block; margin: 1em auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/fcac6b1\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/640x481+0+0\/resize\/640x481!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fewscripps-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F27%2F15%2F1abaf31245609d7661e64e212a4b%2Fkck-officer-shooting.jpg\" alt=\"KCK POLICE OFFICER HURT\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"Figure-credit\">Tim Hellhake<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The suspect then continued to flee in the direction of the 7200 block of State Avenue. At that time, two officers, including Simoncic, attempted to deploy stop sticks.<\/p>\n<p>After deploying the device, Simoncic moved out of danger to the median, which KCKPD Chief Karl Oakman said is normal protocol. However, the suspect avoided the sticks and veered toward Simoncic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a situation that we do across the metro thousands of times a year, deploying stop sticks,&#8221; Oakman said in a press conference Tuesday morning. &#8220;And this individual felt the need to run Hunter down&#8230; That is not a vehicle accident; this was an intentional act of homicide on a police officer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"VideoEnhancement-title\">Kansas City, Kansas, officials provide update after death of Ofc. He then went on to attend Pittsburgh State University for his undergraduate (Bachelor of Science in sociology) and Oklahoma State University for his master&#8217;s in forensic science.<\/p>\n<p>Before becoming an officer, he worked for the Southeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center as a shift supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2023, Simoncic graduated from the KCKPD Police Academy. In his graduation program, he wrote he wanted to become an officer so he could &#8220;take what he learned in life to make positive changes in a community he believes truly deserved it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"Figure\">\n<div class=\"Figure-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto; display: block; margin: 1em auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/bc4992e\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/1113x623+0+0\/resize\/1113x623!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fewscripps-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fea%2Fff%2F2ed5692241889243bea77c9c0a2f%2Fhunter-simoncic.png\" alt=\"Hunter Simoncic.png\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"Figure-credit\">John Batten\/KSHB<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He also thanked his parents in the graduation program for instilling ethics such as &#8220;character, hard work and grit, as well as life tools he needed to pursue his career.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Further, Simoncic mentioned he wanted to serve as a mentor to the youth. He made good on that promise by frequently volunteering to read at Banneker Elementary School, Oakman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is devastating to this community, it\u2019s devastating to the Unified Government, it\u2019s devastating to the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department,&#8221; Oakman said. \u201cIt is equally devastating when you have to look into the face of the family and tell them this. They are heartbroken, and you see it on their face. It is something as a police chief you never want to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Loss in KCK, Wyandotte County <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Simoncic&#8217;s death comes just one month after the line-of-duty death of <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kshb.com\/news\/local-news\/deputy-ming\/live-updates-community-gathers-to-pay-respects-for-wyandotte-county-deputy-elijah-ming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wyandotte County Sheriff&#8217;s Deputy Elijah Ming<\/a>, who was shot and killed July 26.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this community, this department, we will need a lot of prayer, and we will need a lot of support,&#8221; Oakman said.<\/p>\n<p>KCK Mayor\/CEO Tyrone Garner said he nearly had no words for the &#8220;senseless, unnecessary&#8221; acts of violence that continue in the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are right back again mourning the death of one of our heroes,&#8221; Garner said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"Figure\">\n<div class=\"Figure-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto; display: block; margin: 1em auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/37691db\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/3840x2160+0+0\/resize\/1280x720!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fewscripps-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F49%2Fd4%2F733af479496aa810ec62a066f88d%2Fhuntersimoncic.png\" alt=\"huntersimoncic.png\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"Figure-credit\">KCKPD<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He said his heart hurts for everyone touched by the loss of Simoncic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just don\u2019t have a lot of words to say to comfort this community,&#8221; Garner said.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone looking to offer their condolences can do so in front of City Hall by the police memorial; KCKPD anticipates a patrol vehicle will be in position by Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The KCK Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 4 has established a fund for Simoncic&#8217;s family. Donations can be made at any Public Safety Credit Union location.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Suspect in Simoncic&#8217;s death<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The suspect in Simoncic&#8217;s death was <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kshb.com\/news\/crime\/kckpd-chief-31-year-old-man-arrested-in-connection-with-death-of-kck-police-officer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identified as Dennis Mitchell III<\/a>. Oakman said he was taken into custody around 1 a.m. after he was in a wreck in the 6400 block of Kaw Drive.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"Figure\">\n<div class=\"Figure-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto; display: block; margin: 1em auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/f05556f\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/1039x584+0+0\/resize\/1039x584!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fewscripps-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F6b%2Fc5%2F1dac763a48b7859f5746c5911f7e%2Fdennis-mitchell-iii.png\" alt=\"Dennis Mitchell III.png\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"Figure-credit\">Wyandotte County Sheriff&#8217;s Office<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Mitchell was transported to the Wyandotte County Jail after he was treated and released from the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, vehicular homicide, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, theft, criminal possession of a firearm and aggravated failure to appear.
