Judge Frank Caprio<\/strong>, best known for his compassionate rulings on the television show Caught in Providence<\/em>, has died at the age of 88<\/strong>. His family announced his death on his official Instagram page on August 20, 2025<\/strong>, and colleagues across Rhode Island paid tribute to his remarkable career and humanity.<\/p>\n

A Judge Loved Around the World<\/h2>\n

Widely known as \u201cThe Nicest Judge in the World,\u201d<\/em> Caprio earned international admiration for his warmth, humor, and belief in the goodness of people. Millions came to know him through televised court sessions, where his empathy and fairness left a lasting impression on viewers.<\/p>\n

His family emphasized these same values in their public statement:<\/p>\n

His Battle With Pancreatic Cancer<\/h2>\n

In December 2023<\/strong>, Judge Caprio revealed that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer<\/strong>. In a video posted on Instagram, he explained that what was normally a joyful occasion \u2014 his birthday \u2014 had been overshadowed by the difficult news.<\/p>\n

Despite the diagnosis, Caprio remained optimistic. He shared that he was receiving treatment from doctors in Rhode Island and at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute<\/strong> in Boston, adding:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI know this is a long road, and I\u2019m fully prepared to fight as hard as I can.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As his illness progressed, he continued updating his followers. One of his final photos, posted from his hospital bed, showed him smiling and giving a thumbs-up, thanking supporters for their love and encouragement.<\/p>\n

Shortly before his passing, he again addressed his audience with humility:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cUnfortunately I\u2019ve had a setback. I\u2019m back in the hospital now, and I\u2019m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to his family, Caprio passed away peacefully at 2:15 p.m.<\/strong>, after a long and courageous battle.<\/p>\n

Early Life and Career<\/h2>\n

Frank Caprio was born on November 24, 1936<\/strong>, in Providence\u2019s Federal Hill<\/strong> neighborhood, to Italian-American parents who worked as fruit sellers while raising three children.<\/p>\n

As a young man, he shined shoes, delivered newspapers, and worked on a milk truck. His determination led him to attend Providence College<\/strong> and later Suffolk University<\/strong>, where he earned his law degree while teaching government at Hope High School<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

His public service career began in 1962<\/strong>, when he was elected to the Providence City Council<\/strong>. He later held leadership roles in education, including serving as chair of the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
