He was acting sluggish, losing weight, staying out all night. I insisted that he enter a rehab center, and I let him come back home when he came out a month later.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\"><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"3098\" data-end=\"3139\">Unfortunately, his struggles continued.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3141\" data-end=\"3394\">\u201cThe professionals told us that if your child is using drugs, he has become the drug: He is no longer your child, and he no longer has a home with you,\u201d she revealed. \u201cSo, I locked him out when he was 20, which was the hardest thing I ever had to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3396\" data-end=\"3554\">For the next 12 years, Matthew was in and out of rehab. Despite his struggles, his parents remained hopeful and tried to help him through his darkest times.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3556\" data-end=\"3827\">\u201cWhen he visited us, sometimes he\u2019d laugh and say, \u2018Here I am, better lock up everything,\u2019\u201d Eden recalled, admitting that he often stole from them to support his addiction. \u201cBut when he was sober, he\u2019d tell us, \u2018I\u2019m so sorry. I love you more than anyone in the world.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3556\" data-end=\"3827\">\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\"><\/div>\n<h3 data-start=\"3829\" data-end=\"3865\"><strong data-start=\"3833\" data-end=\"3863\">A Battle Against Addiction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3867\" data-end=\"4078\">Matthew\u2019s battle with addiction had moments of remission. At 27, he was married and studying creative writing at UCLA. But, as Eden painfully recalled, \u201cthe cycle began again,\u201d leading to his wife leaving him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4080\" data-end=\"4131\">His struggles eventually led him to homelessness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4133\" data-end=\"4233\">\u201cOne day, soon after they separated, he called me, sounding half-dead, and said, \u2018Mom, I\u2019m sick.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4235\" data-end=\"4333\">Eden rushed to find him, ultimately locating Matthew in a run-down Venice, California apartment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4335\" data-end=\"4489\">\u201cMike\u2019s wife and another friend drove with me to a bad part of Venice, and we found him in his apartment, unconscious from an overdose,\u201d she remembered.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\"><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"4491\" data-end=\"4662\">Describing the horrifying scene, she continued, \u201cHe weighed 200 pounds, but we three women got him up and to the car and took him to the hospital, which saved his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4664\" data-end=\"4835\">Despite his ongoing struggles, Matthew was later diagnosed with clinical depression at age 29 and was placed on medication, though Eden revealed that it was ineffective.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4837\" data-end=\"5066\">At 31, he appeared to be on the mend again, embracing sobriety and following in his parents\u2019 footsteps. He landed a starring role in\u00a0<em data-start=\"4970\" data-end=\"4992\">To Protect and Serve<\/em>\u00a0(2001) and had a supporting role in\u00a0<em data-start=\"5029\" data-end=\"5040\">Con Games<\/em>, released posthumously.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5068\" data-end=\"5146\">He also planned to marry his fianc\u00e9e, a woman Eden described as \u201cwonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5148\" data-end=\"5289\">\u201cOne day he told me, \u2018Life is great, Mom. I can\u2019t believe I spent so many years not being awake to how green the trees are,\u2019\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\"><\/div>\n<h3 data-start=\"5291\" data-end=\"5327\"><strong data-start=\"5295\" data-end=\"5325\">A Mother\u2019s Worst Nightmare<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5329\" data-end=\"5367\">But tragedy struck on June 26, 2001.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5369\" data-end=\"5449\">At 3 a.m., Eden was jolted awake by a devastating phone call\u2014Matthew was gone.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5451\" data-end=\"5660\">Six hours earlier, police had discovered her 35-year-old son slumped over the steering wheel of his truck. He was an amateur bodybuilder, and authorities also found vials of anabolic steroids in the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5662\" data-end=\"5749\">The autopsy later confirmed that Matthew had died from an accidental heroin overdose.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5751\" data-end=\"5992\">\u201cThen he was dead. He had shot up with a dose of unusually pure heroin, and it was too much for his heart,\u201d Eden shared. \u201cEven when he was getting in shape, he did it like an addict\u2014obsessively. He was unable to do anything in moderation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5994\" data-end=\"6024\"><strong data-start=\"5998\" data-end=\"6022\">Grief and Reflection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6026\" data-end=\"6157\">Still mourning the loss of her only child, Eden, now married to Jon Eicholtz since 1991, continues to reflect on what went wrong.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6159\" data-end=\"6348\">\u201cMatthew took it horribly. He wanted his mommy and daddy to stay together,\u201d she said, admitting that she has wondered if she should have waited until he was older before divorcing Ansara.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6350\" data-end=\"6506\">\u201cBut then I remind myself that so many kids from divorced homes don\u2019t become addicts,\u201d she added. \u201cHe won a lot of battles. But he lost his personal war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6508\" data-end=\"6697\">Matthew was laid to rest beside his father, Michael Ansara, who passed away in 2013 from complications related to Alzheimer\u2019s.
