{"id":32903,"date":"2025-08-01T19:06:02","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T19:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usdailys.com\/?p=32903"},"modified":"2025-08-01T19:06:02","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T19:06:02","slug":"shocking-moment-nuclear-chemist-ate-uranium-to-prove-it-was-harmless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usdailys.com\/?p=32903","title":{"rendered":"Shocking moment nuclear chemist &#8216;ate uranium&#8217; to prove it was harmless"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"main-content-blt12353702b94b3feb\" class=\"content-template_leftColumnInner__Du7BU\">\n<div class=\"content-template_body__RWRhb\">\n<div style=\"display: contents;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\"><strong>A nuclear chemist once &#8216;ate uranium&#8217; while on camera to prove the substance was harmless.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">The nuclear industry is certainly a much-talked-about one ever since the <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/chernobyl\">Chernobyl<\/a> disaster in 1986 which caused disruption across the entire <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/world-news\">globe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">But before all of that, nuclear chemist Galen Winsor toured the Northwest of the <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/us-news\">US<\/a> for the conservative John Birch Society, where he would share theories on the over-regulation of the industry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"floating-video-player_container__u4D9_\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Winsor&#8217;s interest in the topic began way back in the 1950s as he began running and even processing the extraction of plutonium at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">He was in charge of measuring and controlling the nuclear fuel inventory and storage, while he later <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/travel\">traveled<\/a> and spoke to people across the US, talked on the radio, and made many videos discussing the &#8216;misunderstanding&#8217; surrounding nuclear radiation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-image_articleImage__eyzAn\">\n<div class=\"article-image_imageWrapper__ANtPE\">\n<div class=\"resizable-image_wrapper__LRQlr\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto; display: block; margin: 1em auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/images.ladbible.com\/resize?type=webp&amp;quality=1&amp;width=3840&amp;fit=contain&amp;gravity=auto&amp;url=https:\/\/images.ladbiblegroup.com\/v3\/assets\/blt949ea8e16e463049\/blt2696af3ac3a87e7b\/688cc38eea2b374bb2d49f31\/Screenshot_2025-08-01_at_14.38.16.png\" alt=\"The footage has gone viral (YouTube)\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" data-nimg=\"fill\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><cite class=\"image-credit_imageCredit__YMlqS\">The footage has gone viral (YouTube)<\/cite><\/div>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">In 1985, Winsor took things to the next level to prove his point as he was recorded holding up a bottle containing &#8211; what he says is &#8211; radioactive uranium oxide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Just the name sounds like something that would kill you, but Winsor decided to proceed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">&#8220;The state of Washington sent two of its Gestapo agents over to my home to confiscate my uranium samples,&#8221; he said in a video, which has since been posted to the likes of <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/youtube\">YouTube<\/a> and Twitter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Remarkably, Winsor ends up consuming the substance, much to the surprise of those at the lecture watching on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">&#8220;What I&#8217;ve just done makes me high level nuclear waste,&#8221; he said shortly after taking a tongue reading with his Geiger counter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">&#8220;According to federal regulations, they will have to bury me 3,000 feet in Carlsbad, N.M.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Winsor added: &#8220;I do this in front of audiences, and they go wild.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Winsor died at the age of 82 in 2008, some 20 years after consuming the uranium oxide. His cause of death was not revealed in his obituary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">The remarkable video has resurfaced multiple times, with many on the internet having their say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">&#8220;Galen is an absolute legend. If all of the engineers and scientists in society were like him, we&#8217;d be in a much better state,&#8221; one person commented on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">While a second added: &#8220;He lived until 82 which shows how it really is not dangerous in small portions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Of course, you really shouldn&#8217;t be doing this at home and it&#8217;s not clear if the substance Winsor &#8216;ate&#8217; was actually uranium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">How Stuff Works <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/science-vs-myth\/what-if\/what-if-ate-uranium.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> that consuming 25 milligrams will immediately &#8216;wreak havoc on the kidneys&#8217;.
