According to multiple eyewitnesses, the orca \u2014 a 6-ton male named Kairo<\/em> \u2014 suddenly became agitated mid-performance, lunging toward the edge of the tank where several staff members stood.<\/p>\n

Moments later, the orca seized trainer Melissa Grant, 34, by the torso and dragged her violently underwater. \u201cIt was like watching a horror movie unfold in real life,\u201d said David Carson, a father of two who was sitting in the front row. \u201cThere was blood in the water, and people were screaming and crying. Emergency teams were called immediately, but by the time divers reached the victims, it was too late. All three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the names of the two other victims pending family notification.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are heartbroken by the tragic loss of three of our beloved team members. Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones. We are working closely with investigators to understand what led to this unimaginable incident. All animal shows have been suspended indefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Kairo<\/em>, the orca involved, has been in captivity for over 12 years and was considered one of the park\u2019s most \u201creliable\u201d performers. However, several former employees and marine activists claim the whale had shown signs of increasing aggression in recent months.<\/p>\n

Animal rights organizations, including PETA and Orca Watch, have renewed calls for an immediate ban on using marine mammals in entertainment shows.<\/p>\n
