As a father of three and arguably the greatest quarterback of all-time, Tom Brady<\/strong><\/a> knows firsthand the challenges of balancing family life with professional sports \u2014 so he doesn\u2019t understand why pro golfer Scottie Scheffler<\/strong><\/a> would have to choose between the two.<\/p>\n

\u201cScottie said he\u2019d rather be a better father and husband than a good golfer,\u201d Brady, 47, wrote in his weekly newsletter<\/a>, published Tuesday, July 29. \u201cAnd my question is: why are those mutually exclusive? Sure, they\u2019re different blocks on the pyramid, but they\u2019re part of the same pyramid. They\u2019re connected!\u201d<\/p>\n

Brady shares son Jack, 17, with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan<\/strong>, as well as daughter Vivian<\/a>, 12, and son Benjamin, 15 with ex-wife Gisele B\u00fcndchen<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think part of being a great father is being a great example of doing what it takes to take care of your family,\u201d he continued. \u201cI chose to do it by playing football. My dedication to the sport, the hours of practice, the moments when I was laser focused\u2014those were times when I believe I was doing the best possible thing for my family and my kids, by prioritizing my profession and teaching, by example, what it takes to be really good at your job, what it takes to follow through on commitments, what it takes to be a great teammate; and showing them, also by example, that work is a big part of all of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brady\u2019s comments are in response to an answer that Scheffler, 29, gave at media day prior to the Open Championship in Northern Ireland earlier this month. Scheffler, who went on to win the tournament, said that he valued being a husband and father<\/a> above being one of the best golfers in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a fulfilling life,\u201d he said at the July 15 press conference. \u201cIt\u2019s fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it\u2019s not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart\u2026That\u2019s why I talk about family being my priority because it really is. I\u2019m blessed to be able to come out here and play golf, but if my golf ever started affecting my home life or it ever affected the relationship I have with my wife or my son, that\u2019s going to be the last day that I play out here for a living.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brady explained that he places his own priorities in a pyramid with himself at the top. His partner and kids come next, followed by work. But he also said he knows when to focus on each of those priorities when the time comes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe trick is recognizing which aspect of your life is most pressing, from moment to moment, and then learning how to prioritize what it takes to be great in that aspect when it matters,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
