Bryan Kohberger got a new mugshot on Thursday as he was transferred from the Ada County Jail into the custody of the Idaho Department of Corrections.
\nThe convicted murderer appears gaunt and expressionless in the photo, taken as he begins to serve out multiple life sentences for the murders of four University of Idaho students: Xana Kernodle, 20; Ethan Chapin, 20; Madison Mogen, 21; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21.
\nKohberger will not be reporting to prison just yet, however. Instead, he will go through two weeks of a reception and diagnostic process known as RDU, which a spokesperson for the IDOC tells PEOPLE was designed to “evaluate their needs and determine appropriate housing placement.”
\nAt the end of this period, Kohberger will likely serve his sentence at the lone maximum security prison in Idaho or be transferred to a facility in another state, something Idaho has previously done with other high-profile inmates.
\nWhen asked about the process behind making those placements, the spokesperson said: “Out-of-state placements are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and consider safety and security of our staff, the facility, and other prison management reasons as deemed necessary.”
\nKohberger has now spent over 900 days in four different facilities.

\nHe was booked into the Monroe County Correctional Facility after being arrested in December 2022, before being extradited to Idaho and booked into the Latah County Jail.
\nKohberger spent over 20 months at that jail before being transferred to the Ada County Jail in September of last year after the judge overseeing his case granted the defense’s request for change of venue.
\nHe then remained at the Ada County Jail until Thursday, when he became a ward of the IDOC.
\nIn two weeks, he will likely move to a fifth, and likely final, facility.
\nThat final facility will be where he serves his four life sentences without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 10 years for a burglary charge \u2014 all to be served consecutively \u2014 per Judge Steven Hippler.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
