Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor perhaps best known for starring in the TV sitcom \u201cThe Cosby Show\u201d as son Theodore \u201cTheo\u201d Huxtable, has died at 54.<\/p>\n

Warner drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday, Costa Rican National Police told ABC News. Warner\u2019s official cause of death was asphyxia, police said.<\/p>\n

Warner died near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica, police said. Police said he was caught by a high current in the water and was discovered Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Warner was formally identified by Costa Rica\u2019s national police.<\/p>\n

Warner played Theo Huxtable for all eight seasons of \u201cThe Cosby Show,\u201d which ran from 1985-1992, receiving an Emmy nomination for the role.<\/p>\n

Warner also starred with Eddie Griffin in the 1996-2000 sitcom \u201cMalcolm\u00a0& Eddie,\u201d and as Dr. Alex Reed in the BET sitcom \u201cReed Between the Lines.\u201d He also appeared in guest roles on dozens of television shows over the years.<\/p>\n

Warner most recently starred in the Fox medical drama \u201cThe Resident\u201d for five of the show\u2019s six seasons.<\/p>\n

Born Aug. 18, 1970, Warner caught the acting bug early in life and attended and graduated from The Professional Children\u2019s School in New York City.<\/p>\n

He made his first television appearance in an episode of the TV series \u201cMatt Houston\u201d in 1982 and also appeared in the \u201cFame\u201d television series the following year.<\/p>\n

In 1984, he landed his role in \u201cThe Cosby Show\u201d alongside Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, Lisa Bonet and more.<\/p>\n

In 2023, Warner\u00a0appeared\u00a0on \u201cLive with Kelly and Mark\u201d and shared how he got the role.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen my agent submitted me, they were looking for a 6-foot-2-inch 16-year-old,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cBecause it was a running joke \u2014 Mr. Cosby\u2019s son at the time was 15 and was\u00a0[6 feet, 2 inches tall].\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that they weren\u2019t able to find someone with that criteria, so his agent resubmitted him for the role and he auditioned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was literally the last person they saw,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The role earned Warner an Emmy nomination in 1986 for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.<\/p>\n

Warner\u00a0spoke\u00a0to Bevy Smith about the legacy of \u201cThe Cosby Show\u201d in 2023, saying, \u201cThere\u2019s a generation of us who went to college, they sought out higher education because of that show. There\u2019s a generation of us that went and got married and had loving relationships with each other and their children because of that show.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThat impact is irreversible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following \u201cThe Cosby Show,\u201d Warner continued to appear in several television series including \u201cThe Michael J. Fox Show,\u201d \u201cKey\u00a0& Peele,\u201d \u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d and \u201cSons of Anarchy\u201d in 2014, as well as \u201cSuits\u201d and \u201cAmerican Crime Story\u201d in 2016.<\/p>\n

In 2011, he starred in the BET comedy series \u201cReed Between the Lines,\u201d alongside Tracee Ellis Ross.<\/p>\n

He also starred in several films, including \u201cThe List\u201d in 2007, \u201cFool\u2019s Gold\u201d in 2008 and \u201cShot\u201d in 2017.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Warner earned a Grammy Award for best traditional R&B performance alongside Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway for their cover of Stevie Wonder\u2019s \u201cJesus Children of America.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u00a0told\u00a0Questlove in 2023 that he was 26 when he started playing the bass as a hobby while working on \u201cMalcolm and Eddie.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also spoke about playing the bass in a 2015\u00a0interview\u00a0with ForBassPlayersOnly.com, saying, \u201cI always say the bass chose me because as a kid, the bass was always thing thing that resonated with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got my first record player when I was 8 and the first record I stole from my mom\u2019s collection was Grand Central Station,\u201d he added. \u201cSo at 8 years old, that\u2019s what would hit me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warner also earned a Grammy nomination in 2023 for best spoken word poetry album for \u201cHiding In Plain View.\u201d<\/p>\n

In June 2024, Warner started the podcast \u201cNot All Hood\u201d with Candace Kelly, where they talked about mental health in the Black community and more.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0told\u00a0People in May 2024 that the podcast was a space for him to \u201cbe as vulnerable as I allow myself to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo many of our Black images and so much of our Black music shows one side of our Black culture,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to make sure that we can balance that out with the many other aspects of Black culture out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2013, Warner told the Archive of American Television that his \u201cproudest achievement\u201d in life was \u201cbeing able to have a post-Cosby life and post-Cosby career and still have my head on as straight as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had such an awesome life,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cI\u2019ve got my ups and downs and all of that, but if I die tomorrow, I know I would go with a smile on my face.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI have peace of mind and for me, you can\u2019t put a price on that. And I can definitely say that I feel successful in my post-Cosby life and having a peace of mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
