The world has lost a rock legend.<\/p>\n

Ozzy Osbourne<\/strong><\/a>, the Black Sabbath<\/strong> rocker known for his decades-long career in the music industry, died on July 22, his family has announced. He was 76.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” they said in a statement shared to the U.K. Press Association. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musician’s passing comes after he had experienced a series of health issues over the years, including a battle with Parkinson’s disease<\/a>. In June 2022, Sharon Osbourne<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0shared that her husband was undergoing a “major operation<\/a>” that was “really going to determine the rest of his life.”<\/p>\n

Born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, Ozzy struggled in school, but it was clear early on that his future would be in the spotlight. As he shared in the 2020 film Biography: The Nine Lives of\u00a0Ozzy\u00a0Osbourne<\/em>, “The only thing I had a passion for was music.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

That passion\u00a0turned him into a superstar. In 1968,\u00a0Ozzy,\u00a0Tony Iommi<\/strong>,\u00a0Terry\u00a0“Geezer”\u00a0Butler<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Bill Ward<\/strong>\u00a0formed Black Sabbath, a band name that came to Tony after he noticed the public’s interest in scary movies.\u00a0The move,\u00a0Ozzy\u00a0once told Rolling Stone<\/a><\/em>, “was the f–king change of my life.”<\/p>\n

Not long after the band started to take off with its self-titled debut album and follow-up\u00a0Paranoid<\/em>, Ozzy met and married his first wife\u00a0Thelma Riley<\/strong>. Together, they welcomed two children:\u00a0Jessica<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Louis<\/strong>\u00a0(Thelma also had a son,\u00a0Elliot Kingsley<\/strong>, from a previous relationship).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, as the group became more successful,\u00a0Ozzy\u00a0realized\u00a0living life as a rock star wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. “Money would be the alcohol and the drugs,” the musician said in\u00a0Biography: The Nine Lives of\u00a0Ozzy\u00a0Osbourne<\/em>,\u00a0“and I behaved badly.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

On the personal front,\u00a0Ozzy\u00a0officially split from Thelma in 1982\u00a0and married\u00a0Sharon,\u00a0who was also\u00a0his manager, soon after. Together, they welcomed three children:\u00a0Aimee<\/strong>, Kelly<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and Jack<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“She’s the only one I’ve ever loved in my life,”\u00a0the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer\u00a0said\u00a0about Sharon in the documentary. “I mean, she’s my soulmate.”<\/p>\n

While there were many happy memories in their decades-long marriage, there were difficult times, too, including\u00a0Ozzy’s battle with addiction, his 1989 attack on Sharon, her 2002 fight against colon cancer (she was declared cancer free in 2003) and their 2016 breakup<\/a> (with the couple renewing their vows in 2017<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Some of the family’s ups and downs were documented on\u00a0The Osbournes<\/em>, a reality TV series that aired on MTV from 2002 to 2005 and starred\u00a0Ozzy, Sharon, Kelly and Jack. The show became a huge success.<\/p>\n

“He’d crossed over,” Jack said on\u00a0Biography: The Nine Lives of\u00a0Ozzy\u00a0Osbourne<\/em>.\u00a0“He’d made that leap from being that guy on the poster in your teenage son’s bedroom to now the guy on the TV in the family living room and mom and dad loved him just as much in a different way.”<\/p>\n

Prince of Darkness, TV star, husband and father:\u00a0Ozzy\u00a0had done it all.\u00a0“I never thought I’d make it this far,”\u00a0Ozzy\u00a0told\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2018 while reflecting on his career. “Fifty years is a lot. I don’t understand why I’m alive still after the hell-raising days. I guess whoever the man is upstairs, if there even is one, wants me to stick around.”<\/p>\n
