Taylor\u2019s then-boyfriend believed the plain-clothed officers were intruders and opened fire on them, leading to officers returning fire with their weapons and killing the 26-year-old hospital worker in the process.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">During the deadly police raid, former Louisville officer Brett Hankison fired blindly into Taylor\u2019s home and also sent bullets into a neighboring home, just missing a pregnant mother and a young sleeping child next door, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/trump-justice-department-seeks-one-day-prison-ex-officer-breonna-taylo-rcna219324\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">NBC News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/17\/politics\/breonna-taylor-justice-department-sentencing-recommendation\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">CNN<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/07\/17\/brett-hankison-sentence-breonna-taylor-raid\/85255750007\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\"><em>USA Today<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Hankison <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/crime\/brett-hankison-fired-for-misusing-deadly-force-in-breonna-taylor-shooting\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">was fired from the police force<\/a> in June 2020. &#8220;I find your conduct a shock to the conscience,&#8221; then-Louisville Police Chief Robert Schroeder told Hankison at the time. &#8220;I am alarmed and stunned you used deadly force in this fashion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The disgraced officer was later charged for his involvement in the botched raid at the state and federal level.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Hankison was acquitted on a state charge, according to NBC News. However, Hankinson was <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/breonna-taylor-civil-rights-were-violated-by-ex-louisville-officer-jury-determines-8738770\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">found guilty<\/a> of violating Taylor\u2019s civil rights by a federal judge last year, PEOPLE previously reported.
