8-Year-Old\u2019s Mom Receives Letter from Her After She Died in Camp Mystic Flooding: \u2018I\u2019m Just So Grateful\u2019 (Exclusive)<\/h1>\n

Blakely McCrory had already faced tragedy in her young life but kept her \u201ccontagious spirit\u201d until the end: \u201cShe\u2019s looking down on us,\u201d her mother says<\/p>\n

This year was Blakely McCrory\u2019s first at\u00a0Camp Mystic.<\/p>\n

The 8-year-old was following in the footsteps of her mom, Lindsey McLeod McCrory, who also \u201cwent there as a girl,\u201d she tells PEOPLE. Lindsey\u2019s stepmother, stepsisters and sisters also attended the\u00a0Christian summer camp, which sits on the banks of the Guadalupe River in Texas Hill Country.<\/p>\n

Blakely, a \u201cthird-generation Mystic camper,\u201d was \u201cecstatic\u201d to attend, Lindsey, 50, says. \u201cShe could not wait to be in the outdoors. It was like having the biggest sleepover you can imagine as a little girl, because you\u2019re in a cabin with 11 girls who become your best friends, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou get to do all of these fun activities for four weeks. You get to do horseback riding, swimming, basketball, fishing \u2014 everything she loved to do,\u201d the Texas native says of her daughter.<\/p>\n

So on Friday, July 4, when Lindsey first learned that there was flooding at the camp, she imagined her daughter spending a rainy day inside the cabins, much like when she \u201cwas there during a flood in the summer of 1987.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re probably having a blast,\u201d Lindsey \u2014 who was in Europe with her younger sister at the time \u2014 recalls thinking to herself, \u201cbecause that\u2019s what I remembered: \u2018Oh, rainy day, stay in your cabin, play board games, or listen to music, whatever. It\u2019s going to pass.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Several hours later, a call from one of Lindsey\u2019s best friends revealed the gravity of the flooding, caused by overflowing in the Guadalupe River amid disastrous rains: \u201cThere are campers not accounted for.\u201d<\/p>\n

So Lindsey combed through her voicemail inbox, and a message from Camp Mystic confirmed the worst and left her \u201cshaking.\u201d Blakely was missing.<\/p>\n

Along with her sister, Lindsey booked a flight back home to Texas that night, Saturday, July 5, with \u201cno news\u201d of her daughter\u2019s condition. Meanwhile, back at home, Blakely\u2019s older half-brother, Brady (whom the 8-year-old \u201clovingly referred to as Bro-Bro\u201d) and his mom went to an evacuation center in Ingram, Texas, near Camp Mystic, to search for the missing camper, to no avail.<\/p>\n

By Sunday, Blakely was still unaccounted for, and her mom \u201cstill had hope,\u201d she tells PEOPLE.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought, \u2018Oh, maybe she and one of those counselors are somewhere dry, but they\u2019re just lost.\u2019 \u2026 \u2018Maybe they\u2019re just lost, and I don\u2019t know, they\u2019re surviving together somehow.\u2019 I mean, of course, you want to think these things,\u201d Lindsey says.<\/p>\n

On Monday night, she learned that Blakely had been found dead. In that moment, Lindsey recalls being surrounded by loved ones, and glad to know what happened to her little girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the most terrifying part of this ordeal was the confirmation that she was unaccounted for originally,\u201d the mom tells PEOPLE. \u201cBecause I always had this fear of someone kidnapping her, and just not knowing what happened to her. That was the biggest, the fear of the unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt comforted by everyone who loves me, and just by my faith,\u201d Lindsey says.<\/p>\n

But she also empathized with the ranger who made the call. \u201cI know she\u2019s tough to do that job,\u201d she says of the ranger, \u201cbut to make those phone calls to the families, I can\u2019t even imagine just the trauma that she\u2019s going through, call after call, you know, have to bear witness to all this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I guess I had prepared myself mentally for that phone call, that I might get that call, that she has passed,\u201d Lindsey says. \u201cSo I was calm. It gave me some closure, and I knew she was in a safe place, with her daddy, in heaven. I knew that it was going to be okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blake, Lindsey\u2019s husband and Blakely\u2019s father, died in March at age 59 following \u201ca short battle with stage 2 cancer.\u201d And, \u201cright before\u201d Blakely\u2019s death, Lindsey\u2019s brother died, also at age 59. Despite these tragedies, Lindsey says, her late daughter\u2019s spirit remained strong.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a live wire, just had a fun, spirited attitude, the type of child that doesn\u2019t stay down for long,\u201d Lindsey tells PEOPLE. After her father\u2019s death in March, \u201cshe was sad, but she didn\u2019t skip a beat \u2014 a very resilient child.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 8-year-old had \u201ca contagious spirit,\u201d her mom says. \u201cPeople wanted to be around her. She was so funny, and she was a prankster.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to her humor \u2014 which manifested in pranks like putting her pet box turtle in her mom\u2019s purse \u2014 Blakely was also a grounding presence, up until the very end: After the floods, one of her cabin counselors told her mom that \u201cshe encouraged the campers to not be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the wake of the tragedy that unfolded at Camp Mystic (at least 27 campers and counselors died at the\u00a0Christian summer camp, officials previously announced), Blakely\u2019s family found some solace in items recovered from her cabin \u2014 including a letter she wrote to her mom.<\/p>\n

\u201cDear Mom, How are you? I am good,\u201d the letter \u2014 pre-filled stationery filled in by Blakely \u2014 reads. The 8-year-old went on to tell her mom that camp is \u201camazing,\u201d and shared her excitement about playing tennis and horseback riding.<\/p>\n

Having the letter, Lindsey tells PEOPLE, is \u201cactually very special because I knew that she was having the best time of her life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just so grateful to keep her spirit alive,\u201d the Texas mom says. \u201cI want to be the type of mom that honors my daughter, and keeps that spirit close, and not forget, not put pictures away, and not be able to look at them. That\u2019s not me. She\u2019s so close to me, and I know she\u2019s watching me right now, and keeping me close.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, she, Brady and the rest of the family are \u201chealing together,\u201d Lindsey says. \u201cIt\u2019s so tough to be without her, and my husband, but we\u2019re just, we are reassured by our faith, that she is in heaven,\u201d she says of Blakely. \u201cShe\u2019s there, and she\u2019s okay, and she\u2019s looking down on us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we strongly believe that it happened quickly. She didn\u2019t have to suffer. I just have this feeling,\u201d the mom says. \u201cShe\u2019s with all those campers and staff who died, and other children. I just imagine it as a happy place, a peaceful place.\u201d<\/p>\n
