but his decision to include this detail in his brief remarks outlining the crime suggest it is <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/bryan-kohberger-prosecutors-lay-out-evidence-discuss-motive-11766211\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">relevant to the case prosecutors were building against\u00a0the convicted murderer<\/a> before he <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/bryan-kohberger-set-to-plead-guilty-to-all-counts-ahead-of-idaho-quadruple-murder-trial-avoiding-death-penalty-11764111\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">suddenly agreed to a plea deal earlier this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">That container could also be, in part, why prosecutors were able to get Kohberger to plead guilty to a burglary charge, though by Idaho law he also committed that crime by entering a home with the intent to commit a felony.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<figure id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block people-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image--no-theme no-theme figure-landscape figure-high-res\">\n<div class=\"figure-media\">\n<div class=\"img-placeholder\" style=\"padding-bottom: 66.6%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"mntl-sc-block-image_1-0\" style=\"max-width: 100%; (Zach Wilkinson\/Moscow-Pullman Daily News via AP)\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto; display: block; margin: 1em auto;\"><br \/>\n<\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption id=\"mntl-figure-caption_1-0\" class=\"comp mntl-figure-caption text-utility-100 figure-article-caption\"><span class=\"figure-article-caption-text\">The door prosecutors believe Kohberger used to enter and exit the home.<\/span> <span class=\"figure-article-caption-owner\">Zach Wilkinson\/Moscow-Pullman Daily News\/ap<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cThere were two other roommates in the house, and they were already asleep during the course of [the murders] and one of those roommates awoke,\u201d Thompson said in court.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">He continued: \u201cShe looked out her door, not knowing what was going on, and saw the defendant, who was dressed in black with a back balaclava on, holding some sort of container in his hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">That roommate told police she then watched Kohberger exit the house through a sliding glass door in the kitchen, the same way prosecutors suspect\u00a0he entered the residence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"><strong>Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? height: auto; display: block; margin: 1em auto;\"><br \/>\n<\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption id=\"mntl-figure-caption_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-figure-caption text-utility-100 figure-article-caption\"><span class=\"figure-article-caption-text\">Xana Kernodle.<\/span> <span class=\"figure-article-caption-owner\">Xana Kernodle\/instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The most likely explanation is that Kohberger had the DoorDash order Xana Kernodle received just moments before her death in his hands.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">This would explain why Thompson suggested in court that Kohberger <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/bryan-kohberger-did-not-plan-to-kill-all-4-victims-prosecutor-says-11766508\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">likely had not planned to kill Kernodle and boyfriend Ethan Chapin<\/a>, and only did so after accidentally running into Kernodle as he tried to exit the home from the third floor <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/bryan-kohberger-murder-details-how-he-got-inside-who-he-targeted-revealed-in-court-11765624\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">after stabbing Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen to death<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Kernodle received a <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/bryan-kohberger-eyewitness-doordash-driver-testify-trial-11761010\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">DoorDash delivery at the home around approximately 4 a.m. <\/a>that morning, according to a copy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/crime\/new-details-revealed-probable-cause-affidavit-released-university-of-idaho-murder-case\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">probable cause affidavit <\/a>obtained by PEOPLE.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The affidavit also said that Kernodle was on TikTok at 4:12 a.m. but her phone showed no activity after that time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Five minutes later, a neighbor&#8217;s security camera located less than 50 feet from the wall of Kernodle&#8217;s room &#8220;picked up distorted audio of what sounded like voices or a whimper followed by a loud thud,&#8221; according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<figure id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block people-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image--no-theme no-theme figure-portrait figure-high-res\">\n<div class=\"figure-media\">\n<div class=\"img-placeholder\" style=\"padding-bottom: 150.0%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"mntl-sc-block-image_3-0\" style=\"max-width: 100%; or using the container to stash away the murder weapon and avoid leaving behind DNA.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">That second possibility would explain why the eyewitness did not see him holding the murder weapon, which he had just used to kill four people.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_39-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">It would also explain why Kohberger left the sheath to his KA-BAR knife behind, if he had always planned to stash the weapon in a container and, as a result, forgot the sheath in which he used to bring the weapon into the house.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_41-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Kohberger could have also taken a memento.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_42-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_43-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">It is unlikely that the former criminology student would have arrived at the murder scene with a container given his plan to stab his victims to death, which means that the container had to be something he was taking from the home.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_44-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<figure id=\"mntl-sc-block_45-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block people-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image--no-theme no-theme figure-landscape figure-high-res\">\n<div class=\"figure-media\">\n<div class=\"img-placeholder\" style=\"padding-bottom: 66.6%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"mntl-sc-block-image_4-0\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto; display: block; margin: 1em auto;\"
