President Trump said the Secret Service \u201chad a bad day\u201d when a\u00a0would-be assassin\u2019s bullet<\/a>\u00a0came within a quarter-inch of killing him during a 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pa. \u2014 but insisted that \u201cI have great confidence in these people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it was unforgettable,\u201d Trump, 79, told daughter-in-law Lara Trump in an interview that will air on Fox News Channel\u2019s \u201cMy View\u201d Saturday night. \u201cI didn\u2019t know exactly what was going on. I got whacked. There\u2019s no question about that. And fortunately, I got down quickly. People were screaming, and I got down quickly, fortunately, because I think they shot eight bullets.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president also praised the\u00a0Secret Service<\/a>\u00a0counter-sniper \u2014 \u201chis name is David\u201d \u2014 who \u201cdid a fantastic job\u201d taking down\u00a0gunman Thomas Crooks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Late Wednesday, the Secret Service announced six officials had been\u00a0punished for failings<\/a>\u00a0surrounding the Butler shooting, but Trump said he was \u201csatisfied\u201d with the briefings he\u2019d received since his near-death experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should have had somebody in the building [Crooks shot from], that was a mistake,\u201d he said. \u201cThey should have had communications with the local police, they weren\u2019t tied in, and they should have been tied in. So there were mistakes made \u2026 But I was satisfied in terms of the bigger plot, the larger plot, I was satisfied.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I have great confidence in these people. I know the people. And they\u2019re very talented, very capable. But they had a bad day. And I think they\u2019ll admit that. They had a rough day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
