home in Pennsylvania<\/li>\n<li>Investigators found a dirty Q-tip used by Kohberger&#8217;s father in the trash, which police were able to match with DNA on the knife sheath and secure an arrest warrant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Confessed Idaho murderer Bryan Kohberger might still be a free man if not for one big mistake he made at the crime scene.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">At Kohberger&#8217;s plea hearing in Boise last week, Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/bryan-kohberger-murder-details-how-he-got-inside-who-he-targeted-revealed-in-court-11765624\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">detailed the investigation into the quadruple murders<\/a>\u00a0and how local police were able to track down the killer with the help of federal agents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Thompson admitted that there were a number of holes in the investigation, but one thing that linked Kohberger, 30, directly to the crime scene \u2014 trace amounts of his DNA.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-30245\" src=\"https:\/\/usdailys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bryan-kohberger-court5-7225-758c0237d755416eacc06dd1025bf90e-300x177.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/usdailys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bryan-kohberger-court5-7225-758c0237d755416eacc06dd1025bf90e-300x177.webp 300w, https:\/\/usdailys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bryan-kohberger-court5-7225-758c0237d755416eacc06dd1025bf90e-1024x604.webp 1024w, https:\/\/usdailys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bryan-kohberger-court5-7225-758c0237d755416eacc06dd1025bf90e-768x453.webp 768w, https:\/\/usdailys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/bryan-kohberger-court5-7225-758c0237d755416eacc06dd1025bf90e.webp 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Upon entering the off-campus home near the University of Idaho on Nov. 13, 2022, Kohberger immediately\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/bryan-kohberger-murder-details-how-he-got-inside-who-he-targeted-revealed-in-court-11765624\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">proceeded from the second-floor entrance to the third floor<\/a>, said Thompson, where his first two victims Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, were laying in bed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block collapsed\">\n<div id=\"mm-ads-native-fluid_1-0\" class=\"comp mm-ads-native-fluid mm-ads-native \" data-right-rail-index=\"2\">\n<div id=\"mm-ads-native__adunit_1-0\" class=\"comp mm-ads-native__adunit mm-ads-gpt-dynamic-adunit mm-ads-gpt-adunit scads-to-load gpt native dynamic js-immediate-ad js-immediate-ad-loaded\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Goncalves tried to fight him off but was overpowered, and after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/bryan-kohberger-did-not-plan-to-kill-all-4-victims-prosecutor-says-11766508\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">stabbing the two young women to death<\/a>, Kohberger then tried to leave the crime scene, Thompson said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">His plan changed after he crossed paths with Xana Kernodle, 20, on his way downstairs. He proceeded to stab her and her sleeping boyfriend Ethan Chapin, 20, to death, Thompson said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Kohberger then fled the home, but left behind a piece of evidence integral to police identifying the former criminology student as a suspect.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<figure id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block people-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image--no-theme no-theme figure-landscape figure-high-res\">\n<div class=\"figure-media\">\n<figure id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block people-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image mntl-sc-block-image--no-theme no-theme figure-landscape figure-high-res\"><figcaption id=\"mntl-figure-caption_1-0\" class=\"comp mntl-figure-caption text-utility-100 figure-article-caption\"><span class=\"figure-article-caption-text\">Prosecutor Bill Thompson (second left) with his team of lawyers.<\/span>Idaho Fourth District Court<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">&#8220;The defendant, as he left that room for whatever reason, ended up leaving behind the sheath for a KA-BAR knife. It was left on the bed next to Madison Mogen&#8217;s body,&#8221; Thompson said in court.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The sheath contained trace amounts of DNA, which alone couldn&#8217;t identify a suspect, but was enough to match with DNA from another man found in a national database &#8211; the suspect&#8217;s father.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">&#8220;Law enforcement at this point were aware of Mr. Kohberger, had been accessing information about him and were trying to find him. They located him in Pennsylvania and did what&#8217;s called a &#8216;trash pull,'&#8221; Thompson explained in court.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"><strong>Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage?
