What a difference a year makes.<\/p>\n

Former President Joe Biden was snapped struggling to set up a beach chair Thursday before catching some rays with family near his son Hunter\u2019s home in Malibu, Calif., to kick off his first Independence Day weekend since leaving office.<\/p>\n

The ex-commander-in-chief \u2014 who took\u00a0more vacation days than any modern US president<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 looked right at home lounging under a red umbrella with former first lady Jill Biden, while granddaughter Finnegan and grandson Beau Biden Jr. frolicked in the sand nearby.<\/p>\n

At least 577 days of Biden\u2019s 1,463-day term were spent vacationing \u2014 including luxurious\u00a0stays at St. Croix<\/a>\u00a0and Nantucket as well as family getaways at Rehoboth Beach, Del.<\/p>\n

During his trips away from Washington, viral videos of the 46th president\u00a0stumbling while walking across the sand<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0taking a tumble off his bike<\/a>\u00a0gave ammo to critics calling out his mental and physical decline.<\/p>\n

Thursday\u2019s photos show the 82-year-old former Delaware senator and vice president happily\u00a0shaking sand from his towel while wearing his signature aviator sunglasses and presidential baseball cap, before packing up.<\/p>\n

Onlookers later spotted the elder Biden dining with Hunter\u00a0at his favorite sushi joint<\/a>\u00a0Nobu<\/a>\u00a0later on Thursday after having given a keynote address at a human resources conference in San Diego earlier this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not want you to miss any important family obligations for work,\u201d the ex-president told the\u00a0Society for Human Resource Management\u00a0of his instructions to White House staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are moments we\u2019ll never get back,\u201d the former president warned attendees.<\/p>\n

The Malibu beach trip took place one year and six days after Biden\u2019s halting and at times incoherent debate performance against Donald Trump that ultimately forced him from the 2024 race.<\/p>\n

Since then, the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress have launched investigations to determine whether Biden was compos mentis while in office \u2014 or if aides were pulling the strings.<\/p>\n

Several lines of inquiry are focused on which Biden advisers were authorized to use the presidential autopen, a mechanical device that signs executive actions and pardons.<\/p>\n

Critics of the last administration have speculated that some pardons in the final weeks of the Biden administration may have been approved via autopen \u2014 and without the president\u2019s full knowledge.<\/p>\n

Washington, DC, journalists have also spilled metric tons ink on the Biden cognition question, with CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper and Axios\u2019 Alex Thompson penning a book on the 2024 cycle that claimed a massive cover-up by top White House aides hid the president\u2019s diminishing mental acuity from the public.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can see that I\u2019m mentally incompetent and I can\u2019t walk and I can beat the hell out of both of them,\u201d Biden shot back May 30 in reference to the \u201cOriginal Sin\u201d co-authors just weeks after the book was published.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations. Any suggestion that I didn\u2019t is ridiculous and false,\u201d the ex-president also said in a June statement responding to the Trump administration and congressional probes.<\/p>\n

Biden\u2019s personal physician, Dr. Kevin O\u2019Connor, is scheduled to be deposed by the House Oversight Committee over the matter on July 9 \u2014 and will also likely face questions about the president\u2019s recent prostate cancer diagnosis.<\/p>\n

During his four-year term, Biden\u00a0never released the results of any cognitive tests<\/a>\u00a0or PSA screenings, the latter of which would have shown the cancer before it metastasized.<\/p>\n
