Wendy McMahon\u2019s departure marks the second high-profile leadership change at the network in less than a month<\/p>\n
CBS News is facing another leadership shakeup after CEO Wendy McMahon announced her resignation. Her departure follows the exit of a prominent executive producer, who stepped down just weeks ago.<\/p>\n
McMahon\u2019s announcement comes as the network and its parent company Paramount are considering settling a $20 billion dollar lawsuit with President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>, whose team is suing over the editing of\u00a0Bill Whitaker\u2019s\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0with then-presidential candidate\u00a0Kamala Harris<\/a>\u00a0in October 2024.<\/p>\n CBS News’ parent company, Paramount Global, is currently working to complete a merger with Skydance. The company needs regulatory approval from the Trump administration to do so.<\/p>\n McMahon, who became CEO in 2023, wrote about the \u201cprivilege and joy\u201d of leading the network in a Monday, May 19, memo to colleagues announcing her departure, according to\u00a0Deadline<\/a>.<\/p>\n She also wrote that recent months at the network had “been challenging,” adding, “It\u2019s become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward. It\u2019s time for me to move on and for this organization to move forward with new leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n According to Deadline, CBS News is losing a “staunch defender” of\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0and CBS’ news division with McMahon’s exit. She leaves the company just one day after\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0completed its 57th season, during which the show continued to air hard-hitting reporting about the Trump administration.<\/p>\n The network previously lost another leader amidst the proposed Skydance merger when\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0executive producer Bill Owens resigned due to difficulties maintaining independence, per\u00a0The New York Times<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n In an April 22 resignation memo obtained by the\u00a0Times,\u00a0<\/em>Owens said it became “clear” to him that he “would not be allowed to run the show as I have always run it, to make independent decisions based on what was right for\u00a060 Minutes,<\/em>\u00a0right for the audience.”<\/p>\n
